How to model and rig the inside of a mouth?

Hello. I’m studying how a mouth is modeled and animated by referencing files of Sintel.

I have noticed that a mouth of Sintel is separated from the main body. So, I’m like how is it being controlled? I looked at the rig but couldn’t figure it out.
I thought usually it’s being controlled with shape keys but I’m not sure. if it’s separated, I don’t think the shape keys work.
Also, I’d like to know how to model production level of the inside of a mouth.

I’d appreciate if you could tell me how or the link of the tutorial.

The Sintel file that I downloaded from blender cloud isn’t working. Maybe because it’s too old? But the Sintel here (http://www.blendswap.com/blends/view/7093) has a decent rig, so I’m getting it.
Seems, the jaw is controlled with weight paint, not shape keys. Inside of the mouth also is controlled with weight paint.
The characters from animation tool kit (https://cgcookie.com/course/character-animation-toolkit/) also has their jaws controlled with weight paint.

So, which is the latest trend in blender? Weight paint or shape keys?
Which do you recommend?

Probably both, weight paint for things with simple movement and shape keys for more complex stuff, like the cheeks when smiling. Both would work in this case.

You would set it up so when you move the bone only the jaw and the lower part of the mouth moves, the upper part stays in place.

For the modeling you can look at reference photos of mouths (scary), you’ll probably need some stuff at the sides so you can’t see through to the face.

Thank you for answering. I would use both.
And yeah, that was really scary. :o
I’m modeling the inside of a mouth, which is really complex and difficult.

Even though the mouth and the inside are different objects, the meshes are perfectly aligned and there is no gap… amazing. and hard to make.

So, I joined them together and filled the gap.
