How to model Roped Ham?

Hello! I’d like to know your recommendations for modelling roped ham because I’m struggling with trying to create the “roped” effect. My knowledge of Blender is very basic so far.

Thank you in advance, help with this would really mean a lot to me.

And you want to tackle one of the most difficult tasks in CGI (food) right away? Besides, that’s not a ham you’re showing, it’s alcoholic modelers’ worst nightmare: cold turkey.

One way is to model the forms and then separate edge or face loops that become the strings and convert those to curves

From top left:

  • subdivided
  • mesh -> transform -> randomize

From bottom left:

  • edges selected and beveled, 2 segments
  • contracted selection (middle loops) beveled again, 1 segment, and larger faces moved along normals with shrink/fatten tool
  • middle face loops inset with some thickness and depth. Selection duplicated and separated to a new object, which become the strings
  • subdivision surface level 3 added to the meat, and strings had edge rings selected and edges collapsed
  • subdivision level 1, object converted to curve. Spline type set to bezier, automatic handles, resolution decrease, fill:full, bevel and bevel resolution increased
  • could adjust the meat object and handling the strings as curves should be a good starting point

When you model the meat part, make the edges flow straight before beveling and so on, that gives more straight strings and makes it look like they’re really tight. Could do that by scaling towards 0 along an axis or by adjusting vertices otherwise. Flowing edges give more loose appearance.

Hi there! I’ve looked at a lot of posts and I really like what you’re doing. By education, I’m a mathematician, I have a beautiful spatial visualization and can create beautiful drawings. 3D modeling is very cool thing, so I think to take some courses, while I have time, working as freelance for researchpaperwriting. Thanks for inspiration to make a new step!
