How to model this 'simple' shape?

Hi All, I was wondering if someone could explain how to model this shape. I’d like to add thickness to the shape and bevel the edges. I’ve tried using curves, box modelling and I can’t get a decent final result.

Thanks for your help.

If this is what youre looking for, heres 5 steps that I did. Included a blend file below

Hey thanks, but ugh, that’s just a rectangle. I’m trying to create a specific shape…

Oh, are you talking about cutting out those shapes in a mesh like in boolean operations?

This what you’re after? Each object represents a stage in the build, so should give you a guide.untitled.blend (651.2 KB)

Hey colkai, I couldn’t open the blend file, but I was able to import the mesh objects. What you did helps for sure and seems like a solution, but I’m not sure how to create it myself?

I see you created a basic shape as a plane, then skewed the shape, then added rounded corners, then solidfied and bevelled the shape…but how? lol Do you think you could quickly explain each step?

Hi,

Maybe with a little reading . . . :slightly_smiling_face:
Modeling » Meshes » Structure

EDIT:
To help you take the plunge. . . a little simple explanation:

  • you create a “Plane” primitive
  • you select it and you go into Edit Mode
  • you select all the vertices (the four corners).
  • then the Shift + Ctrl + B keys and by moving the mouse you will bevel these angles.
By playing with the mouse wheel, you will create new edges that will “round” the angles …

Here is a start …

Hey Free Access, I know all that basic stuff. I’m not that noob. I just can’t create this shape with good topology. As I will be using it -close-up in an animation.

Ha, well it’s better when the questions are specific …

What do you call a “good topology”?
If it is for an animation, does your object need a dense mesh to be able to be deformed?

Is it at the object modeling level that you have a problem? What have you already done … !!!

Regarding modeling, this is relatively easy…

You pretty much nailed the whole process there. You could get the same result a number of ways, as FreeAccess says, you can draw the polygon over an image as well. I can do a small video to show you my process. I can stick it on YouTube.

You guys are awesome thank you so much!! I was actually so close, but I didn’t realize you could bevel a vertex. I come from a CAD background so modelling in blender isn’t very intuitive for me. Thanks again for the help!
