How to paint subsurface scattering on specific areas?

I want areas on my model to have subsurface scattering and other parts of it none. I tried to use the same technique from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TxTm8x7JXM&ab_channel=RyanKingArt

But it just made the skin glow white and not red??

First make sure that your mask is working fine (connect the image directly to the surface output).
Maybe there are problems with your UVs?
All white areas will have sss, all black areas will not have sss.
Now check if your material looks right with and without sss (for the whole object without using the mask).
Now connect the mask if everything works.

Just an example of what your SSS map should look like… I use an alpha Mask along with this for more control … I added a deep blue SSS color to see the effect ( doesn’t work well on a flat plane but you get the idea)…
