How to render light ray againts empty space?

Hi all,

I am experimenting with the light ray settings, and no matter what I try i am not able to render the light ray againts empty space… you might get what i mean by this picture…

I have placed a spotlight at the headlight as shown, and i want to make the light rays shoot thru the headlight in a square shape…

please tell me how to achieve that… or point me to a good tutorial on this?

I have yet another question… whats wrong with my mesh orientation that i am getting funny result when applying mirror modifier?

Ok i think i know the problem, its because of the local axis of the object is not aligned correctly…

But I still do not know how to rotate the local axis only to the correct orientation…

The R-key rotates geometry in any view you choose… Use CTRL-key while rotating for steps or SHIFT-key for fine rotation…
