How to replicate water surface explosions?

I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while now without much luck. My question is, how would you go about creating a water explosion similar to this:

I tried it with a fluid simulation, although the end product ends up looking nothing like this.
Any help would be appreciated.

I’d think of it more like a smoke sim, there’s no way to get enough resolution with a fluid sim for this to look OK

I’ve tried a smoke sim but I can’t seem to get that to look right. i’m somewhat new to smoke simulations so maybe somebody more experienced can demonstrate it.

This is where i’m at:

When I add more particles it begins to look like a mushroom cloud, which isn’t what i’m trying to achieve. Any thoughts?

Oh, and here’s the .blend

Water Explosion.blend (958.0 KB)

here a houdini video, maybe with helpfull steps (it looks like 3 flip fluid layer over each other)

maybe you can increase the mass or gravity of the smoke to behave more like water, not sure have not tryed this, just a idea.
or mix a fluid sim layer for the splash and a smoke sim layer for foggy water with more weight as sayed before.

Thank you! I’ll try it out and post it on this thread if it works out!

Alright, So after about an hour of trial and error, i’ve finally gotten something i’m satisfied with:

I think the thing it was lacking was something I didn’t even know you could use with emitter particles:

Children

I’m telling you, if you add these to your particles, they will look 200% better. Just look at the difference!
