how to select the specific gpu used by cycles

hi everyone,
i have installed a nvivda quadro3800 and wanted to add a gtx570. i want to use the quadro for the viewport and the gtx 570 just for cuda rendering (no monitor attached). i wonder if this is possible already?
btw is it planned to use multiple gpu´s in future releases?

any ideas welcome:)

cheers dave

Nope, it is not presently possible to either select or use both gpus. Multi-GPU rendering is a planned feature and Brecht wrote on the mailing list that he already has some code for it but so far he hasn’t been able to test it because he doesn’t presently have access to a computer with multiple GPUs, so it’s not committed yet.

looks like someone should start a collection to get enough money a dual GPu card like this one or a 590
560ti 2Win (dual one card) 768 (384 x 2) Processor Cores
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130737

GTX590 (2x580’s in 1 card) 1024 (512 x 2) Processor Cores
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130693
and also, get him a pair of single 560ti’s(or similar)

he needs both…
he really needs 2 dual GPU cards as well for Quad SLI(4 GPUS with 2 cards)

3 way-SLI…

and he will need a 2500K or 2600K CPU,
and a 1000watt power supply.

I had a setup with 9600gt and gtx 260 and it seams that cycles take the card in second slot or the card that is not connected with the monitor.
So works fine for me with 9600gt for display and gtx 260 for cycles.

Cheers, mib.

really Nvidia should be donating 2 systems to him…
one system with SLI (2X GTX560ti’s)

another system

3 way SLI

2 X 560ti 2Win 768 (384 x 2) Processor Cores (4 GPU Cores)

1 560ti (384 cores)

Cycles(with CUDA) is one of the best marketing themes that Nvidia could use…
they should put some money investing in it…
CUDA also works with other programs like 3d-coat, Adobe, and CUDA video transcode…

thx mib,
i will try it when i am back home.
I have another setup with two gtx580 installed and sadly atm the one with the monitor attached is used for cuda rendering. i will try to connect the monitor to the other gtx580. Hopefully it will work because of the different PCI slot…

I have Intel HD3000 connected to monitor, and gtx560ti not connected to the monitor. It works with cuda when I press “render still image” and I receive cuda error when I choose “rendered” as viewport shading.

That is a known bug that Brecht is working on to solve.

It would be great to be able to choose which GPU to use for UI drawing and which one to render with. I have an Ati HD5670 with OpenCL support and an HD2400 without. Switching the primary monitor to the HD2400 and starting blender on that desktop doesn’t provide any speedup. I’m guessing there is still no way for Blender or Cycles to know exactly which GPU to use for which part.

in blender it works like i wanted: quadro for viewport and gtx for cuda. BUT
the quadro performance driver for max doesnt anymore work if a gtx is installed:(
this combo ist not useable for me atm. need those performance drv for high poly scenes.
in max.

Nvidia should Donate him a system with 2 of these for Quad SLI

GeForce GTX 590 (Fermi)

Stream Processors 1024 (512 x 2) Processor Cores

that would be 2048 CUDA total Cores…

if he could get all of those cores working it would be awesome…

just for Comparison i have a Geforce 8600Gt
and it only has 32CUDA Cores.
(and its over twice as fast as my Overclocked Dual Core 2.75GHZ AMD Opteron)
