I am making a sort of battle scene, and would like to use hair particals to give a bit of depth to the ground. The problem is though that changing the hair length does not change the hair width, so when I make it short (as everything is in miniature) the hair ends up looking like triangles instead of strands. Is there a setting to change its width?

You need to use the cycles hair settings, located at the bottom of the particle system tab. here you can control the width of the base and the tip of the hair. and also the shape too posted a screenshot below of the settings panel. and a couple of screenshots of how the shape settings effect the hair, and how the different hair primatives look
