hey all, i am working on a 3d model and i need a little help, the model is toothless from how to train your dragon, the problem is is i’m not sure how to do the wings, the skin bit. if anyone has a suggestion please comment, i hope to find a way that would be best for this, i am planning on rigging this to animate it.
here’s some screen shots.
Fill. Just fill in the wings with triangles.
errr… i was kinda hoping not to go such an easy way out, i want everything to work out well, i think triangles would distort everything when i would subsurf it. XP
In post pro paint in the wings. Anyone? Rofl
Using triangles to fill in parts of an organic model is a generally bad modeling practice, you then get sharp points and distortions in subsurfing and then you’ll have to remodel it with quads to make it look good anyway.
nice almost looks like mine but with the mouth open and has more detail head looks Great!
I do have one crit: looks like there are to many teeth
here is a image from the movie
oh, thank you so much for this, it helps a lot! (lol, i wish i had the dvd so i could pull up refs. XD)
yeah, i though as much. XD i’ll see what i can do. XD
plus… i think i need to upload a new image, the one above is realy small… O.o
ok, so, if this helps at all… (i dont know how. XD) yeah. XD
if there is a few different ways of doing the wings (while keeping them from distorting) please let me know. XD
EDIT: facepalms nvm, is seems that when i upload a picture… no matter what the site, it shrinks it. XP maybe if i upload on DA…
So just throwing ideas here, but i think durian dragon’s wings had something to do with cloth simulation…i have no idea about the actual mesh though again just throwing out some ideas.
hehe, i know about soft bodies, and i’ll be ading them, my main focus right now is just on how i’ll do them. X) thanks though.
The Durian Dragons did use cloth simulation for the wings, but if you look at one of the blog entries you’ll notice they had quite a few problems with the wing membrane intersecting the main Dragon mesh and getting stuck despite some effort on provisions to help it work better and possibly trying to improve the cloth-sim code itself.
They just kept simulating it until they got a good result, not a real efficient method but it did get the job done.
Also, I believe Imageshack will not resize your image unless it’s over a certain size (1.5 to 3 megs I believe depending on whether you have registered there), also, Mediafire has improved their support for image galleries which they allow you to upload some pretty big images.
oh… never have tryed imageshack, i think i will, thanks.
This image might help you with the wings
oh, thank you so much, this should help allot! ^^

new update on the WIP of toothless.
i will be adding Toothless’s Hiccup made tail and saddle next. X3
whatcha think?
Well you did a good job with the pose, and the model is coming along quite well.
It looks like he’s playing with a Dragon toy (which seems to be a much bigger version of a dog toy, maybe it’s a giant squeaky toy :spin:)
lol, yep. XD i think it is a dog toy actually. XD hehe
hey all, i was wondering if there is anyone out there that is a good riging guy/girl that could help me out with a problem, i have been playing with the rig and noticed that when i closed the characters mouth it would smile, so i have been trying to fix it and so far have just made things worse, please, if anyone could help me with the rig please let me know. please don’t reply saying you can do it if you are a bit new, i would like help from someone who knows how to fix this problem.
if you wanna help please reply with a link to another work you have done showing your rigging skill.
although i have a feeling noone will help, but idk…
When doing poses with armatured objects I can say for one thing that half of making sure actions like closing the mouth is how the geometry is done so it fits together, I’ve never really used armatures but I know this from positioning the geometry of my own Dragon models.
I would think it also helps to try to visualize where the jaw-hinge is supposed to be (if you’re not doing that already) so you can tweak the armature setup to account for that.
