Alex

i wonder when pld will be back online, mobile was not a good place to be…

speechless

no one believed me…samadam is a naive idiot…he wrote do you believe little in power of men…hes an idiot!!

For some reason your posts consistantly irritate me. Maybe its the lack of content, or perhaps the incessent …'s, or perhaps the inability to get facts straight.

yup this here hurricane might drop new orleans off the map…“a modern city Atlantis”

There is absolutely no chance that New Orleans will be left underwater for very long. If that had even been considered then the army wouldnt be dropping sandbags on the dykes, probably as you read this. New orleans will be recovered. And no, that isnt because of nature, that is because of the power of man.

This is going to be interesting

btw i just figured out what Alvaro is trying to say… ROFL edit: I shouldnt say that

Shit like this makes me so f***ing angry. I’m not surprised though…

Just what the hell qualifies you to say that? You know squat about what will actually happen to New orleans, just like the rest of us…

And power of Man VS power of nature? You’re having a laugh aren’t you? Nature gave us everything we have, and it can just as easily take it away. At times the sheer arrogance of man is sickening.

That’s all Im going to say about this. Lets pray for the people of New orleans.

Come off it M@dcow, three quarters of the netherlands is below sea level and it was still drained. The white house is built on a swamp, and it was drained years ago. New Orleans has powerful draining systems- and its significantly smaller than the netherlands is. Besides, New Orleans is a high profile city- not something that the US is going to leave to die.

As regards to nature, I’m not saying that man is more powerful on the whole, but in this situation nature has done its part and it isnt enough to destroy a city. Had there been a cat 5/6 hurricane at the same time as a magnitude 8 earthquake and a volcano eruption then it might be a different story.

And about the nature taking everything away, yes, it could happen, but I think it is far more likely that I’m going to be killed by a nuclear war than the earth somehow swallowing everyone up- the earth is controlled by physics just like we are, nature isnt some kind of higher power (and even if there is a higher power, I hope we can agree that they arent taking a pro-active role in the future of humanity)

lightning…everything u do irritates me!!

if u were in new orleans u would be the idiot looting …

so stfu u panzy…u animal liberal…

stop flaming at my posts u idiot…lightning…

you pre-pubescent scoundral

Just what the hell qualifies you to say that? You know squat about what will actually happen to New orleans, just like the rest of us…

Just remember what happened to Hiroshima (and other cities destroyed by wars) or places destroyed by the tsunami last December. People return to those places and rebuild it. Why? Because it are good places to live. If you search in history you’ll find many more examples like this. So, is New Orleans going to recover from this terrible disaster? I think so.

And power of Man VS power of nature? You’re having a laugh aren’t you? Nature gave us everything we have, and it can just as easily take it away. At times the sheer arrogance of man is sickening.

The power of men is the ability to deal with the forces of nature, most of the time. Nature is unpredictable which means sometimes men isn’t as well as prepared to these forces as they think. But men can learn from these disasters and try to deal with it better next time. Again, look in the history books and you’ll find many examples. It has nothing to do with arrogance, it is just how men is, always trying to survive.

OMG eQuilibrium sounds like me when I was new, except I could spell (almost)

Some past posts by eQuilibrium

Um, calm down dude… stop with the flaming.

EDIT: Whoops, I’m talking to eQuibilrium.

EDIT 2: Actually, both of you. Take the flame war somewhere else.

no come back??..are you stumped???

i have another quote directed towards you…idiots will be idiots…(lightning will be lightning)

Be nice, or don’t post. If you can’t respect other people while you post, then keep your opinion to yourself.

WeirdHat already warned you guys, so locky locky.

Let’s not forget what this thread was really about:

Learn how you can help the Victims of Hurricane Katrina.

I’ve unlocked the thread, by request of thread creator. However anyone who decides to turn this into a flamewar -or gets involved with of any kind of flamewar- will be dealt with directly.

Sorry Desoto.

desoto, i got your pm. here i am!

we fared better than most people here in the gulf region from mobile. i work in a shipyard on the upper nw edge of mobile bay. downtown saw some pretty decent flooding, but as soon as the storm passed, we drained fairly quickly back into the bay/gulf. some light damage here in town.

my shipyard was completely trashed, unfortunately. i have spent the past week shovelling 3inches of mud and shit out of the CAD design floor. (had to throw away about 15 dual xeon IBM CAD workstations along with their monitors. ouch!)

Oh, and we were re-fitting an offshore platform that broke loose and tore things up all around the river. it washed up river until it hit the bridge, then it just banged itself to death up there. we finally got it back in our yard yesterday.
Chemul

my house is fine, and i was up blending around thursday afternoon again. (which is good, because i was right in the middle of a bunch of SSS experiments).

i wish i could say the same for south alabama. my girlfriend works on daupin island (you may have seen the images of an offshore rig washed up on a beach.) 60% of the homes are gone from dauphin island. there is also not much standing south of mobile county and the city proper.

several of my workmates lost their homes, and one has passed away due to katrina. :frowning:

more importantly, new orleans and biloxi, MS. these places did not fare so well. (just watch the news for new orleans). all of the casinos suffered alot of damage in biloxi as well.

so i am alive and well, which puts me ahead of most of southern mississippi and new orleans. if you all want to help, it would certainly be kind and thoughtful of you to donate to the cause:
Try the Red Cross

if anyone else from this community is from this area, I hope you have made it through the storm ok!

I hope anyone in the affected area heeded my warning and the warnings of officials before the storm hit. It looks as though the worst things I spoke of have come true. That NWS employee from NOLA was almost prophetic with his bulletin. Everything he wrote, as biblical and sensationlist as it sounded, came true. Good for him because his warnings were the only ones worth taking seriously.

If anyone has storm stories to add to this thread from first-hand accounts, friends or family members, please feel free to add them. Please limit static however. We don’t need arguing or lots of “boy its bad there” posts. Stories people need to hear are the right stuff so if you have some drop em in. Otherwise please be a contented reader and head on over the Red Cross website and give what you can. Thanks to Dittohead for unlocking this thread!

To pld (I’m certainly thankful he survived):

Do you mean to say the company you work for is refitting the now-famous rig that hit the bridge? If so I’d love to hear a little more about where that rig was from and how exactly it got to where the pictures were taken if you have that info.

Sorry to hear about your workmates and the loss of the workstations. Pretty much everything but the people is “just stuff” as I keep hearing survivors of past-tragedies saying.

How long do you think it will be before Mobile is back to normal? You seemed to indicate things aren’t so bad there. I’m curious to see how far east the serious damage goes. Thanks for your comments and your time!

Regards,
–Chris

Don’t you get enough misery from cable news?

I was one of 3 lead engineers on the project for refitting Chemul. It is a Mexican government offshore hotel platform in for a 20 year refit from service in the gulf. (A hotel platform is exactly what its name implies. it had housing/cafeteria/recreation for approximately 400 platform workers.) We have had it for about a year now doing major work and refitting. basically gutting it and re-building it from scratch almost for the Mexican government.

We had it docked on a heavy lift barge we rented from Alabama shipyards. It was on the barge, and moored at one of our yards upriver from my normal place of work (a satellite yard about 1/2 mile downriver from the bridge). Without breaking my NDA, we basically had a mooring plan in place that failed due to wind and flooding of the area. We designed it for 70mph winds, just like the NO levees were designed for a category 3 hurricane :frowning: Myself and another engineer expressed our concerns with the plan, but the Mexican government didn’t want to hear anything from us… When she broke free, all hell must have been breaking loose  She floated upriver from her mooring, and hit the bridge. The current and wind tried to push her under, but she was too buoyant at that point, and would not budge. So, bridge and platform smashed each other around for a while. Finally, she came to rest wedged under the bridge as seen in the photo in my link. I’ll post more pictures if you want that I took from our yard and across the river on the other side.

I figure it won’t be long before mobile is back to normal. maybe a week at the outside. we are getting power back to most of the city now, and about a week or so until power is restored to the towns south of us, including dauphin island. most of the damage was flood damage, and falling down tree damage. (thankfully, my 4kW and 6kW lasers survived  ) my shipyard is pretty banged up, but we should have it operational in about 3-4 days. not much gas in town at the moment, but new trucks are on their way. all of the emergency supplies FEMA was bringing to us have been re-routed to mississippi, thankfully. I would say we are about the boundary for bad damage on the East side. Across the bay on the East side, they fared pretty well (much better than Ivan). Some wind and rain, and a few trees down, but overall not so bad.
