PLD: I find your story very interesting. The facts that the cable news networks give about it don’t line up at all. According to them the oil platform was moved 60 miles from its original location. You’ve just shown them to be either flat-out lying or just severely misinformed. And the reason I trust you over the cable news networks is that they have ratings to build and your livelihood is unaffected by the truth. Thanks for the info!
yes, the story of the media. Therefore, one must conjecture that much of what we hear is absolute bs. I know most of it is. not absolute, mind you, but it is there, everywhere.
That, or i think all local news broadcasts are written by the network and handed out to be tweaked to a local feel and then read.
i am so sorry about the hurricanes, and what my gov’t is doing about them. Today is the first day i have been happy with the gov’t in a long time, they finally got their asses in gear and started helping them, and Bush admitted that he was disappointed in the gov’t. That honesty gives him one notch less in the admonition rating from me.
I’m actualy heading out for Genta (I think that’s the name of the place, it’s suberb of New Orleans) tomarrow morning. We will be going in by ship and doing some releif work. I’m taking a digital camera with me, so if I have the time (and internet acsess) I’ll post some links to pictures.
I’m working with the International ALERT Academy out of Big Sandy TX, (http://www.alertacademy.com), if anyone was interested.
To be fair, there were a couple of incidents concerning oil platforms here in mobile. one was the Chemul platform we were working on. the other was that another platform had washed up on the beach on dauphin island. The one that washed up on dauphin island may be the one the news channels are saying came from 60 miles away
we try to organise a fun raiser here at the university but i do not know how much money we could raise. i mean you need some more money than few thousand dollars for that desaster. but thats all we can do from here in Ohio.
This news of all of the damage that Hurricane Katrina has left in it’s wake is saddening. But at the same time it helps us to see the need to heed warnings of danger and escape from impending danger when we are aware of it.
I live in the California Bay Area in the U.S. We always live with the constant threat of a major earthquake. There is a major fault line running through the mountains near my home. The only thing that Californians can do is try to prepare in the best way that they can. You never know when the big one will hit out here. I have never experienced a major disaster but I can try to sympathize with people who lives have been effected in this way.
In any case, I hope that the folks who visit this forum are ok in the areas effected by Hurricane Katrina.
Just found out my that relatives in MS. are all ok. My aunts house was lifted off its foundation to some extent by a mud flow, but apparently is salvageable. Their nearest communities, Pass Christian and Gulfport were hit pretty hard though.
that was one hellova storm that hit.
but the looters did just as much.
Heard they held a hospital under seige for narotics…damn.
ah well, the world will heal (i hope)
haven’t seen these many evacuation things since the Tsunami in Indonesia
luckily, Sydney is out of the way(well duh)
so, good luck to those of you who tried to sit it out.
That’s “Gretna” actually. We have a lot of weird city names here.
I’m in Houma (well, between Houma and Thibodaux) and I’ve seen a lot of people from the New Orleans area the past few days. We’re about 60 miles west of New Orleans, so we didn’t have it as bad as some places.
Some people here just got power back today and a lot of traffic lights are still out. The government set up a food stamp location near where I work, and the lines were expected to last all night long through tomorrow, and that’s only for people who were not already on food stamps.
We knew this day would come eventually, but it’s still sad to see all the people who lost everything, including loved ones.
It has been a strange year. We had snow in January (very unusual to snow here) and we had what I believe is the worst hurricane ever to hit the Gulf Coast. Of course, hurricane season lasts another two months.
I edited this because I needed to correct myself and to add a couple of links.
I’m almost physicly sick watching the spin on the news. The local news channel here(Channel 10) has 100’s of volunterrs and lots of money donated and the National Guard won’t let them in and noones giving them clearance. They even got on CNN to urge them use their contacts to give them clearance. I just talked to a girl who’s boyfriend(A kid named Groebeck) gets only 2 mins a day to call out from his shelter. He and 60 others carry children over the human waste that is over flowing and the stories in the shelters in the parishes down here are not much different from the Superdome. He was rescued from a school where they cut a hole in the roof and were airlifted out to yet another evil shelter. They are lucky enough to get ample water, overflowing toilets and still, childern and little babies are dying around him. This is so sick. I have volunteered and I will hopefully head down there to work Monday through Friday in clean up efforts and what ever eles I can be “cleared” todo. I was in the army in the late 80’s early 90’s as a medic so hopefully I can help with the humanitarian efforts. but I will do what ever, anything to help stop this nightmare for the people.

Oh, and hey, Alma. “Looters” did not hold the whole city hostage. The US Army Cleared the whole convention center area in approx 12 hours. So what happend? Did it take the surrounding states 5 days to clean their guns first? psssssss on “looters” and on brainwash media terms and catch-phrases. No offense, I am sure you mean well.
I was made aware that organizations are picking people up in Houston, most of Louisiana and mississippi areas to volunteer. Anyone in Louisiana who have the time or can convince your boss, they are even hiring too, and say that the jobs could last up to 2 years.
I will probably be back to Blend on the weekends, but if not, atleast Blender would be even more awesome when I get back.
much love to the Blender Community.
Take care
To lighten the them of my post, here is a link I found of a Saturday Night Live skit of Mr. Bill about saving America’s Wetlands that was made earlier this year to warn people about the threat of a hurricane that will breech the levees.
Did you know that America’s Wetland’s orginization was turned down in favor of a bride from Alaska to a near island that had a population of 50 people? And the Levees would have been cheaper. It was a slap in the face to me. I figure that if I’m going to live in a world of martial law and facism, I may as well try and keep my joy and help people.
the citizens that are left are looting walking in the diseased waters…
and to make it worse…there blaming it on the government (state & feds)
the feds and state are helping them get out…
yes…they could of made a better dam but they put those funds toward the iraq war …
so i dunno…they could be have a point…but im with government on this one…
I’m pretty sure this is slowly going to turn into a flamewar again. This thread isn’t for politics. Its about the storm and the aftermath. Terrible situation. The hurricane is to blame. That’s it.
