Hyperspace Stretching Effect?

Hi all;

I was just wondering how in the world would you do a hyperspace exiting type effect in Blender, and(preferably, unless someone wouldn’t mind posting the setup), doing it without the aid of Nodes, as that is beyond my skill level right now.

So, I want to make a hyperspace effect.

You know, where the ship exits at the far end of the screen, is extremely stretched out for a few seconds, and shrinks to normal size as it moves within camera view.

So far I’ve thought about just animating a scaling transform, using render layers, and a move transform to bring it from one end of the screen right up to the camera.

But I would like some tips on that; like if there’s a better way or if there are problems with that method.

Also, how would I go about setting up a wormhole type thing for exiting hyperspace? (Like in this animation.)

Thanks

Use a lattice. The old Blender manual had, I think, an example of using a lattice to produce a stretch effect on a spaceship.

Cool. I’ll look into it.

Can you explain why a lattice is better than a simple scaling transform?

Just wondering :slight_smile:

Lattice deformation is different from simple scaling. The effect will be closer to what you’re looking for.

I see.

I looked up the lattice docs in the wiki and it was a little scanty; it didn’t even tell me how to get that panel they were showing in the screenshot.

Or how or why to subdivide it like that.:confused:
