Don’t go the “blender and only ever blender” route. XSI, Maya and the others are all great programs as well. Every one has its own personal strengths which can be useful to you. Knowledge of the other programs will also help you better understand the strengths and shortcomings of Blender. The really big corporations either make their own 3D programs and/or use several different ones in their pipeline. If you work as part of a professional team on a project, you’re often expected to use whichever particular package that they’ve decided. Be flexible.
