I need critics for this dude

something is wrong… But what?

His legs look too smooth? I know he’s got a leotard on, but it almost feels like it’s padded. I think it should show his shape more. (Muscles, knees, etc.) I suspect his ankle extends too far into his foot, too.

Is that what you’re looking for?

I may have this wrong, but it seems like gymnasts are really strong, but not this visibly like his chest and arms just seem a bit to thick.

Ah ok , maybe I should change the size of the hands and make his forearm a bit stronger. I suppose…

Yes I think i have to sculpt his legs a bit more… i’m not quite happy with it too.

can you tell us, if it is a real person? the proportions make him look very cartoonish. is that meant to be?

From scratch as usual. no reference image.

Is he supposed to be really strong, or really agile? Also, is it a static pose, or will it be animated?

Gymnasts tend to be muscular, but very compact and slim. They’re very cut; the individual muscles and striations in the muscles are highly visible. Also, the appearance of muscle changes under load, so the muscles on the tops of his legs would be especially bulgy and visible in this post, because they’re lifting his legs (but if you plan to animate him, you probably don’t want to get too involved in changing muscles under load, though).

There’s no shame in reference images. You’re clearly an awesomely skilled modeler; it’s a pity not to take advantage of every possible tool available to you. I’d do a Google images search of “male gymnast” and then stare at the whole page of thumbnails for a while, to see how muscles behave under the various poses.

I understand you I believe. Thanks.

Well, he very clearly is not Nadia Comăneci … but I like him anyway.

I do think, however, that his legs are a bit out-of-proportion with his body.

Nevertheless, I see a lot of creative possibilities here, partly because is not female and also because the upper part of his body, at least, is so muscular. He is “macho Terminator Dude.” It’s just that it doesn’t quite work for his thighs to be as big-around as his torso.

he just needs some more definition in his legs to match the arms.

Ok, only gripes I got are three:

  • his legs seem a bit too long in proportion to his torso. I can’t recall the rule of form for an athletic male as far proportions. In general, a 1: 1 ratio for legs to body length is the ideal. while a 1:1.1 of body to legs is also in the ball park. But as the legs get longer, the appeal meter gets pegged.

  • the parallel bar on the opposite side seems too thin for such minimal separation. The bars are only about 18-20 inches from each other.

  • The muscle loading of the back, shoulders, neck, and traps, and triceps seems very, very accurately portrayed. My ass is tired just looking at it. The abdominal’s as well look correct. Only lacking is some definition (as was already stated) in the legs in ankles.

Great form and pose though.

I think he looks pretty good. Maybe do some work on the legs, ankles, and feet areas.

Thanks. Yes youre right. I don’t realize how thin was the bar. I will take this point into account playing with the camera orientation and the focal angle for the final shot. Those legs definitly don’t work. I will check it up;).

Today I will try to model the parallel bar base on this reference image

I think it looks pretty good

Checking out some reference images (like this one: http://www.eintracht-frankfurt.de/fileadmin/upload/sportarten/Turnen/Saison/2012/Kevin_Wittig_am_Barren.JPG) you could maybe move his hips and legs a little bit further back. Depends on if this is supposed to be a static position or if he’s moving.

Right! I definitivly have to looks reference image for the future. Thank you.

I wouldn’t change a thing, other than the view so we can see him from a different angle.

I think the foot needs a ankle bone and the leg some muscle detail. knee cap you see some shading on the sides. butt’s a little funny
It is a prefect mix of fantasy and realism.
he is not a gymnast
naw i changed my mind it fine leave it

I disagree about the muscle definition in the legs. If this is a gymnast the clothing for the rings, parallel and horizontal bars and pommel apparatus are elasticised pants, they are not tights that hug the legs in fact the pants assist in showing the straight lines of the legs. It is only the vault and floor where the gymnasts leg muscles would be seen because of shorts.
