I need this cheese to smell real - help me:)

Hello,

I’m working on cheese for my friend from work. We need this cheese for the envelope, while there is no possibility to make photo and no such cheese on stock sites.

Tell me what can I do to make the cheese look more photoreal.
By now its combo of three materials (side of cheese, holes and cut surface) each using different amount of translucent, diffuse, glossy and some displacement noise texture.

Posting the render by now since it’s WIP but when I’m done - I will blendswap it.

BTW - knife not mine - blendswap.

hm, I wonder if maybe volumetrics would be the thing. Other than that, though, apply a liberal ammount of SSS.

Add the SSS  And textuing bump

Good start. 1) Lower right corner of board has misplaced vertex. By the way, how did you do the wood? Especially the end grain. 2) Add some stuff to get a reflection in the knife. Don’t know your final print plans, but do something ( lighten ? ) to either the knife handle or the background to separate them. 3) I think cheese is a bit darker ( a thin layer ) on the outside than inside. But if you go that far, don’t forget to do it to the slices also.

google for a cheese photo, put it on envelope, problem solved

Modron - you mean volumetric lightning? Isn’t it only in blender internal? I thought there is no way to do volumetric in cycles. Also You say SSS. Same case? No SSS for Cycles yet (as I understand it) so I mad the fake one (following blendercookie) from translucent and diffuse. I recognized that when I tweak it it,s better to make the color for translucent a little bit darker.

Kramon - you mean texturing bump on the wooden board - true will work on that.

jeffiek - Didn’t see the problem on board thx (wood is made form two textures from CGtextures - fine wood and wooden ends, I use them to have the displacement also, material is made of diffuse and glossy). 2. Will work on that knife, thx. 3. I’d love to. There is by now a very subtle texture that makes the slice a little bit darker on edges but I can not push it too much since it’s for the envelope, and the real cheese is not that matured. Great idea though.

zedeneye1 - nothing the way we want on fotolia. Looked through 1000 of pics. BTW - you can not use pics from goolge. To use it on the product you have to actualy BUY IT from stock page.

Thank you all for responses. I will work on it tonight and tomorow will try to show you the next step.

its not a problem with the board if you look closely its just that the knives handle is the same black as the blackground…

oh yeah nice cheeese, just needs SSS

Sub Surface Scattering is a must when rendering food. The knife handle needs some roughness. You could also give it a blurred background so that the knife handle is visible.

I worked on it a little more. Still the cheese doesn’t look the way I like it. Too much glossy, for sure. You all say SSS. I say how? There is no SSS. There will be in 2.67 but for now I have to fake it with translucent. I already do it, do you mean that I should add more translucency?

perhaps you are talking about cycles, but 2.66 does have working SSS in the materials panel
(edit) try compositing the cycles render with the BI render. also, those tomatoes could use some sss too.

We tested this with fire. The client has some questions but they … didn’t realize that this is render !!! Still i hope that this project will take loooong time on theire side and so that the new SSS shader for cycles will be around so that on the final product the cheese will look better. I will post version with clients questions somewhere around tomorow.

Success! Congrats!
