This is my latest project in Blender and I would love for you to not only watch it but critique it as well! I’d love to know how and what I can improve on. My goal is to make something of quality similar to the shorts on Love death and robots.
Hi, just watched it, it works well! I enjoyed your scenery, the lighting that perfectly matches with the genre, and most of all, I think you are good with camera framing and movement.
There are two or three things that got me out of the narration :
- when the human character walks towards the orc one, the feet/walk sync problem is easily seen
- the eye contact duel felt a little long, maybe it’s the length itself, or maybe the silence combined that drops the tension. This scene would definitely benefit from a shorter narration and/or a tension in the audio environment?
Well, that was two, not three
. What do you think of this?
edit: PS: I have absolutely no knowledge at all in animation, I only answered you from a passive audience perspective, hope that’s fine for you.
Ahh yes i know that walk cycle just kind of hits you doesn’t it. I can definitely agree it pulls you out of the story. And know that you mention it with the eye duel it does feel long to me. I tried to work with the constraints of the song. I also ended up putting the volume too low for the night sounds like crickets chirping during that part but i can agree with you that it does take the tension away.
Thank you for responding and watching. It means the world to me that someone took the time to give feedback.
Hello ! On the overall it’s cool, there is a lot of work done here and nice ideas.
Well thing is, that these shorts are done by a team of ~20 specialized artists that are going to work for a year on the project. As a result to make something similar you basically need to pull out the equivalent of like 5 to 20 years of work given you are equally talented in all the different areas of CG animation as the team was.
Since it’s nearly impossible and it won’t make sense anyway, the result tend to strive for that quality but fail in all areas because you are still human ( which is a good thing ! )
This gives you different choice of action : you can keep it like that and projects after project incrementally improve on all areas at the same time. But there are a lot of chances that it’s always going to feel a bit behind because you’ll always be overwhelmed by the amount of work it requires.
Solution two would be to focus on fewer areas and start to specialize in that. Maybe you can use less animation and focus more on framing and storytelling.
Lastly you can also try to find a style and projects that are more manageable for one artist. You can argue that it’s already a bit the case here, since you managed to do it anyway, but things can be even simpler !
You can also do a mix of the tree to raise the bar a bit lower and therefore make it easier to reach the best result possible.
That said, there is a lot of cool things here, and different people won’t see the same things !
Keep up the good work !
Thank you. Its so much work. I really tried to focus on keeping things as simple as can be. I need to work on my timing and framing. I also want to do something shorter in terms of shots to keep it simple. Thanks for watching and giving feedback.
I featured you on BlenderNation, have a great weekend!
