I find the lack of sharpness objectionable, along with the lack of detail in the shadows. It makes me feel like quite a few flaws are being hidden thereby. (No offense intended!)

A shot like this one, say in the real world, would be very difficult to light, but lighting would make or break the picture (as it so often does). The feeling of 3D depth almost disappears entirely.
