Insect Texture

Hello all

I’ve been taking part in the blender weekly challenge in the contest thread and this weeks topic is about insects. I have modeled an ant and found that im lacking a texture. After looking at reference pictures i notice that they have a sort of orange opacity which sort of reminds me of jelly. Additionally i noticed that it has a darker tone at its central body mass.

So i have 2 questions:

1: How do i achieve this ‘jelly’ texture effect?
2: Is there a faster way to get a darker central body mass and lighter legs without relying on uv mapping?

Any help would be appreciated  preferably this week as the challenge ends on Saturday US Time

This could be achieved with Sub surface scattering.

Your model is good, i think it deserves proper uv mapping and texturing

I tried the Sub surface Scattering tool and i am unsure if it has done the job. Can i just get an opinion or suggestion to improve as something doesn’t look right

Where is your light source? It looks like ant is on top of light box. Give it more modeling light and then adjust the SSS.

Thanks to both of you. I don’t have any more time for it and those suggestions made a huge influence on its final appearance
