Is it possible to create stylized hair shaders?

I’ve tried searching for some examples but all I find is mesh hair.

I’m talking about grabbing hair nodes or hair particles and trying to turn into something like the new Zelda games. Actually using the strands instead of meshes.

Is it possible to create these shaders for strands?

Anything is possible. Show us an example of what you’d like to achieve

Sort of like this:

These are all made for games which use the “shell texturing” technique which I quite like the look of.
But instead I want to try to do that in Blender, I wanted to use hair nodes or particles instead to try and create this very smooth style.

One way you can do it for particle hair is to use the Clumping Curve to shape the strands into the shape of the Stylized hair…it is an old technique but perhaps it is also something that can be done with new hair curves ( would need some research and testing…

How would you apply that to furred characters? Specially around eyes and mouths?

See the Plane on the top of my image?
Imagine that as the faces of your critters, so possibly combine this with Vertex groups.

This was made to an object so that you duplicate and place them on the Head of a model, so you would make up several of these, large, small, and different lengths, and add them manually… it would take some work on your part…

That’s mesh hair. That’s not what I want. I want stylized particle hair. The stylization happening shader side only.

Sounds like you want something like Ghibli fire.
Have a look at Simon 3D on YT. He has tutorials giving a similar result to your example.

I wasn’t able to find that video. I’ve tried finding something about stylized grass but then I noticed the lighting didn’t quite work.
