Is product 3d modeling better than product photography?

Hi guys this is my first trial in blender. I was trying to make a video ad through 3d modeling the product instead of shooting it irl. However I kinda find it looking unrealistic and feel disappointed for the result. So my question is, is this how far blender can go with product’s realism or is there further enhancements yet to be made on my photo to make it more realistic or is that almost it with blender?

Yeah, I can see why you’re disappointed. But this isn’t remotely “it”; Blender can do much better, from what I have seen. Since I don’t specialize in product renders, I can’t tell you in detail how you get there; maybe somebody else will. If you strike out here, I follow somebody on Youtube who is an industrial designer and has experience doing professional product launches: Derek Elliott; might help to check him out.

Product modeling is better than photography in many cases:

  • you have no physical limitations for your presentation
  • you don’t have to deal with retouching in post
  • you can change your mind about angles
  • you can change your mind about lighting
  • revisioning is faster; you can present early “shots” for feedback

On the downside you have to learn quite a lot about modeling, materials, lighting, and rendering. Some of what you know from photography about lighting transfers, and composition of course does.

I find it extremely hard and sometimes impossible to tell whether an excellent presentation is 3D or a photo. But you have to actually be quite competent with your DCC to reach that level. Only you can know whether the above advantages matter at this point, or whether you should stick with photography for now.

Good luck! (I’m going to move your post to a category that fits better since this has nothing to do with coding – hopefully that’ll attract more people who can help.)

I think it’ll be improved by just adjusting the scene, shadow, and lighting
However, I think product modeling should be at a satisfactory level first in terms of modeling completeness and material.

I actually did some enhancements and it started looking like this. And I am actually happy with it
what do you think?

Thank you so much for your explanation… And sorry about the category mistake I didn’t know what to choose
Btw I actually did some enhancements and it started looking like this. And I am actually happy with it

Some people do with render like this company tht produces weapons: https://www.laugoarms.com/alien.html

I saw plenty of products advertised with renders, even cars.

Infact lots of car advertisements are made with renders, thy cost a fortune to make.

To make beautiful renders in 3D you have to understand practical lighting concepts as well since a 3D renderer is simply mimicking how light behaves in the real world.

This guy’s channel has some good videos on product lighting specifically and has a photography background which greatly informs his lighting decisions in 3D. Digesting this should up your level quite a lot. Highly recommend watching some of his other videos too.
