JATO/RATO bottle; help with texturing

for those who dont know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JATO
a well known example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLFB7q8tyd8

i modeled this last night as a quick exercise. i now want to give it a better material but i know very little about texturing. things like specular/bump/normal maps etc. i have no idea how to make them, use them, or even what they are for. if anyone could point me in the right direction to learning about these things i would be grateful.

any comments/crits about the bottle also appreciated.
thanks!

You could probably start here. It should be your first step into UV mapping:

http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:Manual/Textures/UV/Unwrapping_a_Mesh

sorry should have been more clear. i know how to uvmap. i dont know how to use textures to make something look scratched up and have bumps and things that add to the realism. i use textures for the game engine, but they look very flat and unrealistic.

I recommend just google the search for “metal texture tutorial”

You might find a tutorial you like, one that might fit your needs. Here’s an example of one -
http://www.tutorio.com/tutorial/photoshop-metal-texture

normal mapping will give you some neat surface texture that will make your model look great.

but the details such as rust, scratches, just load up your texture into photoshop and find some good grungy brushes, then paint some rust or scratches in there.

note This is how i make Normal Maps****
i have heard that many people dont like making normal maps this way, but i have found it to be the easiest so far (im new to textureing as well)

what i do is make a bump map (remember bump maps? the black, gray, and white textures that make the texture look bumpy?)

the easy way to make a bump map is to make your UV texture (diffuse) in photoshop or gimp or something of that sort, keeping the base color, scratches, rust, etc. in separate layers…

after you have your diffuse map in photoshop, select all the scratches / rust (not the diffuse colors) then fill them with black, and the rest of the map in white.

save this image as “yourfilenameBmp.jpg” or whatever, then open it up in crazy bump, tell it to open a height map, choose your “yourfilenameBmp.jpg” then it will make a Normal map, displacement map, specular map, etc.

i would recommend playing arround with this technique to make the results you want =)

(i hope this made some sense) lol

Good Luck!
Kam

thanks. i think i sort of understand. so basically you make the maps manually in ps? (ill be using gimp but whatev. :))
