Jeep's sculpting sketchbook

So, I’ve been interested in sculpting lately, and I guess feedback is a good thing for improving, so I’ll be posting a few sculpts here
I don’t consider any of these to be “finished projects” or “works in progress” - just some doodles. That’s why I’m posting here

you might recognize some of these from a WIP thread I had a while back:

C&C?

I like the Dali-esque elephants

Great job Jeepster, the one on the very top looks almost exactly like one of my aunts!

I have always wondered this… How do you achieve such great looking hair?

Can’t wait to see more from you!

for hair, i use the default procedural wood texture as my textured brush, and set it to “Rake” at 45 degrees (45 degrees because the wood is diagonal) then i just draw into the hair piece like that.

Here’s and older raptor sculpt I forgot to add in

and a stylized face

how do you start? do you make a base mesh first? or do you start with a cube?

I never start with a cube,
having a good base mesh with some good topology really helps

These look great! I like your style, especially with the hair.
The elephants actually look like it could be posted as a finished project. Very cool. And, I agree, it reminds me of a Dali painting.

new sculpt!

still pure blender  texture painted a bump map

that elephant one…i seen it some where beforre…the artist who actually drew the elephant was salvador dali…did you take the elephant artwork and 3d render it? because that is sooo cool, how you made it 3d

Jeepster, that bat sculpt is a beauty!!!

Nice work!

Yukosera, yup - I saw the elephants painting and i really liked it, so i set his painting as a background image and started to model and sculpt one

Bliz, thanks! I’ll try to do more similar to the bat…maybe a kangaroo or a dinosaur next

excellent work

still WIP

While you’ve gotton very good at sculpting I must ask why all your animals look disturbingly thin and sometimes kind of unhealthy?

Is it to show off your sculpting skills or do you really enjoy making nearly everything you sculpt look malnurished?

I think it’s just a way to show off his pretty awesome skills of sculpting realistic muscle systems. Other than that, they just look kind of interesting.

Is it to show off your sculpting skills or do you really enjoy making nearly everything you sculpt look malnurished?

well, it’s kind of a combination of the two
the malnurished and muscular look makes it easy to cram in a bunch of detail, and it’s a good opportunity to practice sculpting anatomy
I also make 'em skinny because I think i’m finally developing a style of my own \o/

:edit:
wooooo! post 2000  celebrates

ok, rendered out a turntable

Nice sculpts Jeepster!

I like the elephant and the bat a lot!

Also, you’ve inspired me to open a thread here too for my doodles

little update: i’m detailing the head: http://imagebin.org/53215

Good progress on your hellhound!

How do you go on about adding the fine detail? Do you use textures or draw everything?
