John Bauer Troll Scene

Hello, I am working on a project in Blender to learn new things and practice sculpting. I thought it was time to try a bigger scene from one of my favourite artists, John Bauer. His art is in the public domain so there are no copyright issues to worry about.

Blockout stages so far

Only thing I have to be careful of is the size of the scene because I’m working on my dads Optiplex 3000 computer at the moment with no dedicated GPU but touchwood it is going OK.

I have been adding more detail to the trolls gradually over the last day or so.

I think I’m reaching the limits of my dads computer with this but I’ve detailed some more trolls today. Rendering in Eevee takes ages so I’ve done a screenshot. I might make the scene into a bas relief eventually to save on rendering time and for easier texturing.

It’s so nice to follow your great progress! I hope you find a workaround for the hardware issues!

i recently started exploring sculpting myself, and must say, your progress is truly impressive! Great job!

Thank you very much, I feel like I’m learning a lot with this project.

Thank you, I have used an add on called Quad Remesher to help me get a lot of the objects down in size today which has helped a bit.

Wow, that is so cool! It’s great to see non-typical styles. Excellent work.

Hello I had a bit of a break from this as my dad had to use the computer but I can work on it in the mornings and evenings.

I’ve been working on the troll on the right, I still have some work to do for his hair and cloak. I’m working up to starting on the princess next.
Thanks for the nice comments by the way it really cheered me up

Very nice! John Bauer is a favourite of mine as well, he really captures the vibe of the deep Swedish forests in such a lovely way  I’ve actually made a similar project to yours, I did his drawing of Tuvstar using Maya and Houdini some years a go, rendered it on a potato computer as well and turned out quite fine! So I think you can manage quite well as well, it’s looking great so far! Looking forward to your end results ^^

Thank you very much. Your art is really lovely, I love the mushroom house and troll you did especially.

Had a bit of a stressful week and I wish I had had more of a chance to work on this but I’ve started blocking out the princess at last.

I think the ability to parent objects in Blender is brilliant and really helped me with posing and selecting the hands.

I also learned the monkey local symmetry trick which I’ve been using for the troll heads and will use when sculpting the princesses head.

I love the ability to draw curves on surfaces too, using that for most of the hair so far.

All the best

Worked more on the princess today. The hair is a base I’ll use to make some finer hair curls from and then I’ll try to figure out the crown after that.

Just finding this now and I must say I love your progress! I know about using older computers as well - it took me a year to save up for the one I have now and even now I find I must upgrade the SSD if I want to dive into more coding study.

Beautiful work!

Hello again, I wanted to show what I’ve done so far for the princess. I have to work on the rocks next. I have a feeling that may take a while but I’m glad to have gotten to this

stage.

I’ve added some rocks and I used A.N.T Landscape addon to generate a bit of noise for the floor as well. I noticed I still have lots of bead necklaces to add to the trolls so I can’t call this done yet and I will probabbly have to save texturing it until I get back to my usual computer because my Dads computer is a bit laggy with the whole scene loaded now. Thanks for reading!

(I also want to add some dust mote animation at some point when I’m back with my slightly more powerful computer)

This is wonderful already and I’m looking forward to seeing the textured results. In one of your posts you refered to a “monkey local symmetry trick”. Could you elaborate?

Yes- I put together a video for you here:

It was something I learned from watching an older CG Cookie video I found (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8XcRu9tV68)
