Just beginning the journey

How do you believe I can improve? I followed the tutorial on YouTube. I’m sure you know which one.

Welcome!

I am not seeing any technical problem, so well done on that part. I can see 2 things that could push this image further.

The first thing is to adjust the color management. You will find it in the main render settings. The defaults are a bit drab and washed out, I recommend setting the “look” to something more contrasted. You could also play a bit with the exposure and gamma, try getting something that looks slightly more rich and colored.

The other thing you could try changing is the camera angle. Right now, it looks like the most average view someone would have of those items sitting on a table. Photos tend to look more interesting when you bring the camera closer to the height of the subject. That would be a slightly bigger challenge, as you may need to model additional stuff beyond the table with that lower angle, but I think the result would be worth it.

Check out some other examples here to compare your work. Be sure to uncheck the ‘show studio and pro member artwork first’. If you scroll down you’ll see quite a few images of a similar scene. Yours is actually pretty good compared to most

Great start, welcome!

Just “play around” with your scene and create different renderings.

  • Try different, more dramatic lighting and angles
  • Add an HDRI for more reflections
  • Ad the depth of field in the camera settings, etc.
  • Add patterns/textures to the coffee cup

And so on.

Small changes, but these are all things that will help you learn something new and have an “aha!” moment

Another donut on ArtStation

I think this one is worth looking at. I like the third version best. A principle of composition is that the point of interest should be in the area of greatest contrast, and of course you actually need some contrast to do that, as others have mentioned.
