Kaiju Attack!

Edit 3/10: Texture time! See below for the previous progress.

I haven’t shared any of my own work on here in ages. Now is as good a time as any. I’m in a Pacific Rim mood, so I’ve started on a kaiju. No textures yet, just the mesh so far:

And some detail of the head…

Sculpting is next I think, unless I find something important that I still need to fix with the mesh. I’d appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

This is good. I approve. Have a COOKIE!

Nice beginning! I would change the proportions a bit to make it feel like a bigger monsters. For example smaller eyes, claws thinner, much more amount of teeth, I believe this would make it look more massive.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m not sure I agree about the eyes, but you’re definitely right about the claws.

I’ve made a lot of small changes, enough to make a major difference. You can’t really see in the first screenshots, but he had a bit of a turtle shell thing going on. I’ve gotten rid of that and simplified his back for now. I haven’t quite decided what to do, if anything, along his spine. I’ve also made lots of changes to the claws and digits, giving better definition and more sharpness. And he now has an inner row of teeth on his side-mandibles. I’m not sure I want him to have a lot of teeth. At his size teeth are almost just for show, so the mouthful-of-needles look might not be so good. There are also a number of subtle changes to the face, especially around the eyes, eyebrows and mid-muzzle area. His body and legs have been thickened up a bit. And I’ve added a car for scale.

OK, after a busy couple of weeks I’ve finally had time to get back to this guy. He has an entirely new tail and back, plus a few changes to the feet and face. I think this might be it before sculpting and texturing, unless I get some good suggestions of course.

Modeling is complete. I’ve ended up giving him two sweeping head crests instead of one axe-shaped crest, as well as adding a structure of large scales and scutes along the tail and back. The Sketchfab turnaround in the last post has been updated to show those changes. I’ve moved on to sculpting. The sculpt has lost a bit of the muscle structure, but the base mesh still holds those shapes so that shouldn’t be an issue.

Sweet. Very nice topology… Now the only thing left is a robot, a boat and a city, and it should look awesome

Thanks. But the boat thing has been done. Obviously I’ll need something new. Maybe a high-rise construction crane. :RocknRoll:

Very nice!

Thanks. I’ve started working on textures. The colors are pretty flat right now, just working out a base layer from a few bakes. I’ll paint in some more color variation now. I’ve also added a layer of bioluminescent blue. The pattern isn’t final; this was mostly just so I could test whether or not the shader combination would work as I expected. It did.
