Knife WIP: need help.

Im working on this knife model for a game, and to me the metal doesnt look like metal, i know a spec map would fix this but it still doesnt seem very metalic to me. im guessing added little higlights to the edges like where to blade starts to taper where you can see the groove but i cant figure out how in gimp.

added a specularity and a quick normal to see how this works.

The model needs more styling.

You need to add more ridges so it doesn’t look flat. Thicken the blade so it doesn’t look weak.

For the metal look, I suggest you use Crazy Bump http://www.crazybump.com and add in the diffuse and and spec maps and check metallic color option.

thank you for the advice, i didnt notice the metal color option ill try it out.

The handle should be organically rounded to fit comfortably in the hand. A problem with the blade is the edge; sharpening it should leave fine striations.

ill try sharpening it but the reference i used of the esee 6 has a flatish handle. thx for the advice.

As far as I can tell, the model is good, and you just need better texture and materials.

yea i need to work on my texturing, im pretty bad.

did some major retexturing and i think this loks way better, i just need to work on the specularity.

change the edge, thought it was a little to white.

Getting better! Now it looks like the blade has some kind of coating over the steel, which has been worn away on the corners, and of course on the edge where it’s been sharpened. Maybe a more smooth and even transition between them at the top of the edge bevel? Also, the material on the grip scales looks really flat right now, although that could be the lighting.

changed the edge and added a simple background
