Hi I’m using blender for about three months and my computer is not strong enough to do animation, only 3D modelling. I thought to buy knew laptop and not a PC because I will be able to work while I’m at work.
There is any laptop strong enough for blender? Is it worth the money? I want to buy something around 3000 dollars
Welcome to BA
This is an unpopular opinion and you’re going to see people disagreeing with this in the replies, but I don’t think laptops and Blender mix well. Laptops don’t have the cooling systems for long-period, high-intensity use, which is what all work in Blender is, and and so a laptop used for Blender will die much faster than a PC used for Blender.
There are other reasons I say this- laptops don’t usually have enough RAM for Blender to work well, having just one screen is a serious detriment to an efficient artistic workflow, and Blender uses a lot of power- you’ll have to have your laptop plugged in the whole time, kind of rendering the point of a laptop pointless
If you do really want a laptop, yeah, you can get one for 3000. Bear in mind that laptop components are more expensive, and so you’re going to pay more per component than you would with a PC, but just look up “gaming laptop” on newegg.com
And additionaly: it all depends what you are doing with blender and how powerfull your desktop is…
of course there are laptops more powerfull than your PC for example this randomly choosen monster for over 6000$:
So if you really ask this question you can search and find thousends of opinions in the net or here on BA… but in the end it all depends on your use case ( … and of course th money… )
It may be a better question to ask if someone has a specific experience with any model you may have choosen for further inspection…
Not as unpopular as you think it is.
You are completely right, especially from an economic perspective does it make no sense.
The difference in performance between a 3000$ Laptop and a 3000$ PC is huge.
The luxury of mobility comes with a significant price-tag and the overall productivity on a Laptop decreases considerably.
Not worth it, IMHO.
It is wonderful working with Blender with a laptop, i go to balcony usually, can take it elsewhere.
You did not stated what scenes size. At extreme sizes that need 16GB VRAM and the like yes maybe a laptop with 16Gb VRAM and around 3000 is advisable. Or a desktop.
But if you can do your work with 3070 laptop 8Gb VRAM you can get it for between 1500-2000 euro with 32Gb RAM
I have a Lenovo Legion with a 3060 my only regret is to not have one with a 3070.
Concerning Nvidia GPU it is important you are aware they came with very different power capabilities. So go for 3070 with 145w preferably, for 3080ti 175w, for 3060 130-140w.
I have 2615 points in Blender Benchmark and BMW27 renders in 12.85sec with my 3060(130w).
Websites:
Assuming, your day job is CG unrelated and “$3000 dollars” means USD alongside intent in only fiddling about with Blender (2.9 or above) whilst on a break?
Then sure there’s plenty of performant portable options too choose from. As an aside I’m currently working with a Gigabyte A7 K1 17.3" - Ryzen 7 Series CPU - RTX 3060 GPU - 1TB SSD - 16GB RAM I picked up 4 mths ago, forking out $1800 Australian dollars used to mainly generate game art hard surface content:
Installed apps:
-
Blender 3.2.1
-
Substance Painter
-
Marmoset Toolbag 4
-
Adobe After Effects
-
Photoshop
-
Afffinity Designer
-
GIMP
-
Inkscape
-
UE4
Thus far no issues though the pre-installed WIN11 OS kind of sucks (…comes down to a matter of preference I guess) since my 10yr old PC still runs WIN7 : )

NOTE:
Just a further snippet I thought worth mentioning which is really neither here nor there but rather as a sort of recognition?! is that a few senior weapon artists I personally know of do utilize laptops in production environments whether on site and/or working remote.
For 95% of us…and 95% circumstances…I agree 95%.
One can find sponsored videos of Blender artists telling you how great their laptops are for 3d work. Reality: not as great as a desktop.
With a DIY desktop:
-Pay less
-Get better performance
-Get better upgrade options
-Use large screens or multiple screens which is often absolutely essential
My balcony is for wine drinking, gazing and dozing. Not getting anything done there! Hey, maybe that’s just me. Honestly: don’t remember being on my balcony lately.
The site linked to gives the idea of what you need even though it is for Blender 2.9x and PCs/workstation. Save from hardware, any version from 2.8 on also needs the latest Python version so software must be considered as well.
