I’ve been working on this airplane engine for a while and have learned quite a lot in the process. I am still working on some of the materials. The lighting could be better too. I am planing to put it into a Nieuport airplane that I am modeling. Let me know what you think. This is by far the most aggressive project I’ve attempted.
I think it looks nice and detailed and you said you would change the materials. The only critic is that you should render it out at a higher resolution.
You may want to compare notes with Bigglesworth. He was modeling some very similar stuff recently and with great results. Check out his current WIP here.
Hey, glad to see some more WWI subjects around here.
Looks like a good start. However, the details should be reversed, as seen here. Also, the copper tubing running from the top of the cylinders to the crankcase should be much less circular and more oval. They seem much too skinny and need to flare out more near the connection to the crankcase. A good shot of this can be found here. You should also take note that there are vents on each cylinder, which don’t seem to be present in your model. Looking forward to seeing how this develops.
Wow, you are right Bigglesworth. Somehow I got turned around on my reference material. I do have the cooling fins on top of the cylinder head, if that is what you were referring to. I need to put a better render up so you can see it better. Thanks for your help. I will get busy and make some changes.
Just incase you didn’t know since that’s a rotary engine the pistons/cylinders also spin. Not sure which way though, but probably the opposite of the propeller.
the model itself look really good, but the render you have there is a bit fuzzy. I dunno if you did this on purpose, or maybe you have changed the anti aliasing settings. See if you can get it to look a bit crisper, the AA settings are in the Scene buttons window (f10). See the attachment for a reference to the AA types you can choose. Muck about with them a bit.

Hey, glad to help. The cooling fins I was referring to were the ones running up and down the actual cylinders.

They spin both in the same direction, of course. They are more or less “one piece”. So the whole “unit” spins in one direction.
I finally got all the details going in the right direction on this engine now I believe. As you can see I am still working on the materials. I have a lot to learn about texturing and materials, but you learn by doing it. I just wanted to post an update. I decided to remove the propeller because it seemed to take a way from the engine. I will leave it for the airplane. I appreciate your input.
Thanks Bigglesworth!
The one I am putting in my airplane is not as detailed as this one. You wouldn’t see some of it, plus I think it would make my computer choke. When I got started modeling the engine I decided to make a more detailed model of just the engine.
Mrys you are probably right. A little too shinny for this engine. Actually I should probable use some sort of dirt layer to make it look a little more used. I made a few changes to the texture and toned it down a little.
Mrys I am always inspired by your work. You seem to push the quality to extremes. Thanks for what you do for the Blender Community!
