Lego Shot Missing Something

Hey all, first post but love looking at everyone else’s efforts. Trying my hand at some lego renders, but I can’t shake the feeling that it’s missing something. Happy to hear any thoughts on composition, layout, lighting, anything! Looking as much to learn for future as anything. Not sure if I’ll revise this project or consider it done.

Rendered in cycles w/ hdri lighting.

Thanks in advance for any comments!

First of all… nice details.
Its gonna be hang up there.
I think you can adjust the lighting or environment.
Throw some dof too.
… and messy unused lego pieces to make it more natural.
I love transparent pieces.

Good call, I’ll try some dof. Maybe the hdri is too even lighting? I can experiment with more point lights.

Thanks for the thoughts!

DOF is necessary here. details in the background are too much disturbing.

I’m curious about the ground.
lego pieces have usually same fixed height. Smooth grould like that makes it look fake.
If you use a texture for the heightmap try to posterise it. There is an effect like that in PS. Or you could use some math nodes.

In my opition this composition need something in the foreground like a tree and a vingette effect.

By the way, check this out.

Yeah. Composition is an issue, I think.
The main pieces in your image are the dude in the back and the car, but they take like 10-15% of the image.

Go closer to the car with the Camera and get the dude in the back closer. that will also make the image easier to read.

Great recommendations. I debated the height map of the ground. But you’re right it looks less like real legos. I’ll work on tweaking that, and maybe using larger bricks/plates.

I did watch that video, but didn’t apply it great. I was trying to use the golden-ratio layout, centering on the wheeler, but like everyone has said, it just feels a bit empty and lacking focus. I’ll work on some tweaks.

Thanks very much!

Thanks very much! I appreciate the specific recommendations. I originally had it a bit closer, but was afraid of losing the ‘story’ by not being able to see what’s happening. I’ll try to balance that a bit more.
