Lego Tie Fighter

Here is a Lego Tie Fighter That I have been Working on. The wind sheild needs some work, and I posted a question about making lazers in the modeling section. And I dont remember how to make the background of the render an image instead of a color so if you could remind me that would be great. I looked in the instructions and made every peice. Then I built it folowing the instructions. There were a ton of vertices so it was a bit slow in edit mode but I managed to get it done in about a day and a half. How long would it take an expert to make something like this?

Add AO, change background. add more lights and render again.
Nice model tho.

Nice looking ship. I found the instructions to making a star destroyer but quickly found out how many pieces it was going to take to build it. How did you model your lego pieces? I found an easy to use program one time that would make lego pieces, then I could save them as .obj and import them into blender. Then I could just build away!

Have you done any other models with lego?

JABayne

p.s. You could render the image as a .png with the rgba button clicked on. Then save the image, open it in GIMP and add a background as a separate layer.

Well, first of all, what is AO? and I posted the fact that I dont remember to change the background. How?
And to mak the pieces, I one little section(one peg)=one square in all dimensions, then I added the cylinder and sized it down to be a peg, then once I had a few bricks, I pretty much modled them from that one. And what was this program that makes lego pieces?
And no I have not made any other lego models but I plan to.
Oh wait. I take that back, I did make a lego guy, but that isnt the same.
The reason I made these is because my nephiew and I plan to make a lego starwars game. He designed all the leves and sequences and such and I model. THe only hard part is figuring out the game engine. I currently know nothing about it.But I will spend as much time as necessary to get it down.

AO settings are in the world settings area. Make sure you have ray tracing turned on. AO will increase your render times, increasing your octree value(in the render settings) will take more load off your cpu and put more on your ram, giving you faster renders if you have enough ram)

Your highlights seem far to strong. Great modeling.

How do I turn on Ray Tracing?

in the f12 panel look for the button [ray]. Click on that to turn on ray tracing. I’ll have to dig to find that lego program. Do a search on google for Lego Cad. As for the game engine. If you want to make a lego game, you are better off making some low poly models, and uv/coloring the “lego” look onto them.

JABayne

Is there some way that I can control the “poly”? And what did you mean buy uv/coloring?

You should maybe check out the blender wiki where you will find a lot of info on Ambient Occlusion, UV mapping etc. As far as your render goes, the model is nice, if you change the world background to maybe black and switch on stars, that would begin to give you a background. You could perhaps add a planet and duplicate your ship once or a few times in order to give the impression of a fleet. At this stage i’m not sure you should bother with UV mapping it can be a little tricky at first to get your head around it, at least it was for me.

Oh, I know what UV mapping is and I know how to do it, I just didnt know what he meant when he said “uv/coloring”. The only problem I have with UV mapping is that I dont know how to tell where to mark the seems. And I just need to know how to add an image to the background. Or how do I add planets. I added stars, but how can I make it so there are more. And one more thing, I posted a thread in the modeling section about how i would make lazers like from starwars to add to the effect.

Not sure what he meant about uv colouring, changing the star distance value will change the quantity of stars. To make the background an image use the texture buttons in the world panel and then add an image texture as normal, You’ll find some nice space backgrounds on the nasa website, not sure if that’s what you’re after though.

Sorry. I meant either UVing or Vertex painting the lego look to simple geometry.

JABayne

Hi! Nice model.
The lego program JABayne has talked about might be Leocad.
Also maybe you want to check Ldraw that you can use with MLcad.

Ok, thanks, I will duplicate it a couple of times then try to add lazers and a background( I already have a background I want to use)

Man, I need to update my LDRAW to Blender importer!

PM me if you want me to do it. http://www.princeton.edu/~mplough/ldraw.html

Ok, I added the image to the texture for the world, but how do I make it so that it isnt a color? I is making the image the color of the background. I just want the image.
Oh yeah, and someone said something about an f12 panel. WHat is that?

Ok, I got the background working and this is how it looks:

Hmm… I’ve seen that image somewhere, on Hubblesite.

Pick an image with a higher resolution. Nice modeling though…

I just googled this image. I will look for one with a higher resolution.

i like the back ground but the windshield needs some work. it seems like it has too much of a glare but besides that great model!
