Hi Rickyblender, is this meant to be a game asset? And which version of the Leopard tank is this supposed to be - The A4 perhaps?
Iâm not sure if itâs the lighting youâve chosen but it seems that a lot of detail is missing in the model mesh itself. Tanks are chock full or weld lines, seams, bolts heads, tie down rings, you name it.
The edges of the model should be beveled a bit more and not so sharp.
The turret âtowelâ bars and lift rings are not textured like the rest of the tankâs camouflage.
In the picture above, notice how each track pad has a guide tooth that fits between the wheels.
The extra pieces of track that you have on the front glacis donât appear to be of the same scale as the tracks on the tank itself.
These are just some of the critiques that I have at first glance.
One of the best ways to model a tank (or any real world item) is to work from actual drawings/blueprints.
And make sure you set your blender unit scale to match the drawing so that your model ends up being âinâ scale.
For detail items, there are plenty of references on the internet (some of which I posted above) that you can find. Also, a good resource are hobby plastic model kit sites, in which members unbox new model kits and show the sprues. Their images usually contain close up shots (or shots that can be increased in size) of all types of detail items.
Finally, make sure when you UV unwrap your model that you have used CTRL +A to make sure that the part in question is properly scaled.
Thatâs all I have for now. I hope this helps. Keep on modeling!
1- i checked a model on turbosquid
so probably an older and simpler version
check the web
2- did not use any UV only proc texture
with a camo camouflage - a little stretch along length
i can try to make it less stretchy.
3 - the images you have shown seem to be for a more modern version i think
4 -will try to make a version with a diffuse color to better see all the details
later tonight or tomorrow
thanks for C & C

I always like to check with military blueprints, since it causes a whole mess of trouble- these blueprints have been declassified and approved for public distribution, right?
I did not use any blueprint just a model on a site
just to get an idea on the size and some accessories around
i want to compare it to other tank like M1A an the challenger in terms of size
thanks

here is a version with a little bevel around
and a diffuse color to better see the shape
i also change the world light to get more better details
i must admit iâm still figuring out things for the world set up in bl3.4
and looks like there are more parameters then ever LOL
i think i will replace the back grill which is the only UV map i used
it looks too weird
will make a real grill instead
let me know how it looks

If your goal is accuracy?
Then Iâd suggest using a reference image - âblueprintâ too model off of rather than âeyeballingâ some random mesh and dependent on variant, itâs also typically best practice regardless of skill level especially when modeling hard surface objects due in part capturing various precision based aspects involved.
To at least spend some time researching ones intended subject from the very outset.
Hi Josephhansen,
Thanks for the call out and you are correct- actual military blueprints must be declassified before they can be used. I used the term âblueprintâ in parallel with detail dimensional drawing- which in this case is what I uploaded in the thread. A google or firefox search for same will produce similar results.
not really looking to make a high res - CAD style model!
more a good general looking alike - medium res!
and again as i said did not find if this was the latest model
i did find a low re blueprint
hard to follow and difficult to follow contour lines
Note: always the same problem with blueprints
only trying to compare the modern heavy tanks in term of size
i can try to improve it a little more
like may be modify the tracks too
thanks

Donât normally model an example but in this case, had thought better too illustrate an accurate representation from only using basic primitive shapes to start with or âblocking outâ then iterate detail accordingly which is a fairly fundamental principle for polygonal hard surface modeling, complex objects from scratch:
Minimal segments (low poly count) to initially establish a workable silhouette:
Shade smooth or simply apply a Bevel modifier to error check volumes
Free Reference site - Draughtsman quality drawings:
NOTE:
I usually if possible work from high resolution orthographic images, particularly for vehicles.
Orthographic images a.k.a. âblueprintsâ are invaluable to get proportions correct!
Iâd strongly recommend using tons of regular photos for reference as well, Try to find lots of close-ups and photos taken from various angles - googling something like âLeopard 2a4 walkaroundâ should produce some nice results.
I have a off-and-on-again (though mostly off) Leopard 2 project as well, and I have 500+ reference images for it
nice thread for a high res leopard very interesting
but iâm not aiming for a high res more a medium res
and more interested in comparing the major NATO heavy tank
like M1A1 , challenger , leopard heavy tanks
again not necessarily the latest model or biggest one
just see differences in terms of shape size
thanks for feedback
