Another oldie of mine that I did for the 36 Days Of Type instagram art challenge back in 2023.
Every year creative people from all around the world make their interpretations of 26 letters of English alphabet + 10 numbers using any imaginable medium form graphic design to photography & painting and anything in between. So I decided to design and model letters as various spaceships in Blender.
Though I skipped the numbers (I hate math and numbers) So I only made 26 spaceships for that challenge.
Modeled in Blender, textured in Blender using semi-procedural texture set up I made for this art challenge and reused on few more spaceships from this set 26 illustrations. This set up is made using image with decals I made in photoshop (basically a set of random geometrical stripes and dash patterns) for color accent (here it is red) + some js placement generated plates for bump + set of grunge noises and ambient occlusion combined with some procedural edge ware. I moved around the UV layout of polygons till the abstract decals texture would start to look interesting. Letters G,H,I,J,K and R use the same texture set up, it was done to be flexible using different textures as mask so I could recolor the texture like I did for the J, K and R letters. ok, I LOVE this one! (It’s not just that my name starts with J lol) I love the shape of the ship, like it’s a massive gun! And then I love how on the front of the ship there are the bigger guns pointing forward. But I got to say, Damn I love the turret! I love turret guns so much! I would put them on all of my Lego clone trooper bases I would build! The turret is a very small but an AMAZING detail! Ok one question though, what is the scale of the ship? because it looks like it could be a one-seater with the cockpit’s scale, but that would make the turret tiny, which I don’t think would make much sense. No major critiques although in my personal opinion yellow is a pretty mid color, it just makes it look funky. But dang, I would fly a ship like that without and complaints fr. Imagine the barrel rolls you could hit mid battle!
Well, speaking of the size of the ship and the turret and the color… well, firstly Staring with the color - yes, I am also not a big fan of how the textures and color look here on the yellow ship, so later after 36 days of type I actually made a recoloring and the redesign to look it mole in style of the Star Wars movies, yellow in deed looks a bid off and funky, I agree on that, but it looks bright and ‘‘clickable’’ in the instagram feed so people often react more to bright vivid things.
So here is the retextured ship, more of it you can find on my artstaion, I will post it here as well, but later. For now here are some of the renders of that recolored version:
I imagined that ship to be not very small. you can see hatches/doors on the side of the back part of the ship , they are more vissible in this picture.
So yeah, these doors would be about 170 - cm in height for an average person to use them in comfort. Hope that gives a sense of scale for this ship now
Oh yeah, I did not notice the doors lol. I definitely like the retexture more, the yellow was a little bit glaring. I get the scaling (i think) and I really like it!
