Iḿ doing test for setup my scene, but lighting is a little pain.
here thre examples (same setup, just change one light). (closed kitchen)
Hdri background with 40 strenght, and a portal just in the window (a hole)
The hemi lights position is not relevant in the scene, only its rotation ( like it is with the sum lamp). So even though you placed the light inside your scene, the light is coming from outside.( might be an explaination for the noise)
I’d suggest you to use your first setup with ligth portals and Hdri lighting. You can still use area lights to brighten up certain parts if you like. Thats a common method.
I noticed before that blinds in front of a window is causing noise.
Is it an idea to render without the blind (adjust the strenght of HDRI and no direct sunlight I suppose) and render the blinds seperatly and compose them back in later? Or is that not common practise?
I don’t think that they are that much of a problem, but you can disable them from casting a shadow, which I believe has a similar effect than removing them. I think you can do that in the object panel under cycles settings.
Hdri wont affect much in this scene as there is only one portion from which it is coming in. So you might wanna lower its strength and remove hemi. Instead go for artificial lighting inside. IES gives you better results. and dont put hdri on 0. let it come into scene and do its part but dont exaggerate it.
You might wanna use filmic if you havent as we can see blinds are really whitewashed cause of high hdri strength.
And for render and noise dont go for too much bounces.
There’s not much with glasses so you can put transparency to 4 min and max. and put bounces to 8 max and volume to 0. for fireflies use clamp indirect.
Lets see what you get.
Cheers.
