Yes I know this is a Blender Forum, I just happened to be using lightwave for this project. I was hoping I could get some critisism on this.
Not to be mean but then please go to the off-topic or other software forum part or post to a lightwave forum. You can always post to CGTalk or the like cause they are application agnostic in the critic section.
If we let every one post about stuff they did without blender this wouldn’t be the BLENDERartists forum would it?
Agree, get this OFF from this forum.
Whether or not this belongs here, I really like it.
Criticisms: when he’s flying over the ocean, and you can see the curvature of the Earth, it makes the planet look really really small. I’m assuming that’s not deliberate because the planet is clearly Earth.
Secondly, when you’re looking at the planet from space, the clouds need to be much much more detailed than that - they look fuzzy and low res.
I usually wouldn’t bring either of those up, but you asked for ‘some real criticism’ so I did the best I could.
Also, I love the music.
Seriously,
you guys needs to chill out. That guy is a blender user, who care if he post - a single lightwave project - in here? Many other forum members already did it…and I really don’t see why he couldn’t. I mean, it’s not like he spamming the forums with lightwave project, right?
As for the anim, I found the music to be totally too dramatic for what was going on! But that might just be a personnal taste for musics eheh.
When he’s falling toward the island/water and recover at the last minute, I found the camera to be really disorienting and not very well framed. I would suggest a point of view farther away in which we see him falling toward water, instead of a ‘diving’ point of view which doesn,t give that much reference to height and speed (especially that’s it,s quite dark).
The first scene were we see the earth is out of place imho. We understand that the character is going up, so I would wait untill he’s quite high in the sky to cut to space, and I wouldn’t go back to ground level to show him going up again. But eh, that’s minor.
Good job on the project. But, I do have to ask why you are using lightwave for this? Is it a group project in which you need to share files with others? Is it just because you want to learn lightwave?
What’s with all the hostillity? Sorry for trying to grow as an animator by not just sticking to one animation package. Just like what Ecks said. This is the first and only time I ever posted a non Blender thing in here. (What would be the point in registering for a lightwave forum for ONE little project? That sounds like a waste of time to me.) I’ll never do it again.
Thanks Ecks, and Evilkillerfroggi for the critisism.
I thoughtg it was pretty cool
BUUUTTTT i understand what people are talking about when they say not to post this here. i mean if everyone did it it would all end up as an off-topic forum. but w/e i likededed it. umm clouds dont move as fast as they did in ur animation tho when it showed space… but thats just w.e. lol
I was neither hostile nor was I impolite. I told you very politly that there are forum sections that you can use for little projects not done with blender. Why I say this is very simple: If one is allowed to do it others will follow…
This is in no way discrediting to your animation or your work and it has nothing to do with anybody keeping you from “growing as an animator”.
I certainly don’t want to start a debate. The thing is, even if we “allow” 1 person to post here with a project made using another 3d software, it won’t bring a whole bunch of other to post aswell, for the simple fact that 98% of this community use Blender alone. And no, there is no other place here on the forum to post this. THe “other software” is for support only, and in the off-topic it will receive everything but critics and intelligible comments.
Seriously, there is like 2-3 “other software” post per year in the Finished Project forum. I really don’t see how bad this can be…
I was reffering to Eradicor. I understand what you mean. I wont do it again.
Sorry about my impoliteness too. I am not usually that harsh,… just having long and bad day… (but i still think this is wrong place for this post, maybe other software?)
We don’t have any issues with other software posts here. It is a finished piece, so leave it be.
Thanks.

OK, let me try.
The ROs head does not move until he hits outerspace. Didnt really give me the illusion that it was real.
There seems to be a ‘missing’ piece after one prop goes dead and when the RO is about to hit the water. What happened to the propellers? More of a video editing issue than CGI.
The clouds are rotating too fast.
I thing that bothers me the most about it is the music is too dramatic which was mentioned. I’m also not crazy about the character design but that is more of a personal preference on my part.
Everyone else has pretty much given you a good critical opinion of your work. The only thing I’m going to say is that you can apply your sky image directly to the environment background, you can also render this on the fly in high resolution using the sky baker without having to render it to an image.
Also, your water is frozen in time, but you can animate the fractal noise pretty easily.
mechancially, when his rotor goes out, he would immediately start flipping out of control. and i mean really wildly flipping around…along all axis of movement.
When his rotor goes out (your getting a lot of this :D) he seems to repeat the same little, swoop up, swoop down pattern ya dig?
@Scotchtapeworm
that is not bad. But my question is, why did you choose lightwave, you can do much better one than this one with Blender. What is your main point to choose lightwave instead Blender? (not a flame war, just curious)
by the way, sky and ocean looks really good. but earth texture looks a bit plastic.
I was curious as well. Everything in the video looks like it could be just as easily done in Blender. Do you know Lightwave better or just trying something new?
