linux and cycles - why so slow?

I just did a fresh install of Arch Linux. I rendered a benchmark file with cycles and it was over a minute slower than rendering on my windoz OS.

I’m using the nvidia drivers, ran it from the command line, fluxbox was the only other thing running at the time (aside from a few background processes). Any ideas what I can tweek to get more speed out of linux? Am I missing some other setup I need to do?

Everything I’ve read said that linux should be faster. Is that only with BI and not cycles?

Recently Cycles get some features merged from tomato, as tile renderer. There is a chance that you get build with tile size bug, try latest build on both OS.

… and get it from here:

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I’ll give them a try this evening and report back.
