Steam includes a Linux Native version of Substance. Adobe would have been in superheated hot water if they deprecated an essential linux based VFX toolset just as the industry migrated to linux. They only distribute the linux version via Steam and enterprise subscriptions. So if you have purchased the perpetual version of Substance painter on steam, just go into the version settings and set it to the linux build. Hopefully this solves your issues!
How have I not heard about this until just now? That looks incredible.
Hey there, InstaMat runs natively on Linux. Maybe it is what you need.
MatPlus is also a nice in terms of UX for me. Two things about MatPlus:
- baking takes ages - it is just good old Blender
- Being texture based means it comes with many GB of textures which can be annoying, depending in a big blob of textures.
What I like about Substance Painter and InstaMat is that they bump out your textures in no time when exporting.
I use Substance Painter all the time professionally. I’m retiring and I want to ditch subscriptions and I am moving away from Windows due to being fed up with all the BS. So I’d like something that works under linux.
Substance is supposed to run through Steam under linux but it doesn’t on my rig.
I’ve been reading about the latest texturing updates in 3DCoat, and it’s got me interested. I’d recommend checking it out if you’re looking for greener, subscription-free pastures.
Someone mentioned InstaMAT and it looks interesting.
I’ve looked at 3DCoat.
Hello Owen,
I just saw your post. I have a test system with linux and it will run Substance. It won’t run on my rig though and I’ve tried the various fixes out there. I am using the subscription version, not the perpetual version.
I’ve tested Mat Plus, and while it looks very promising, I find it a wee bit buggy. Substance Painter is possible to get running, but it’s very hit and miss. I’m new to linux so doing a deep dive to find and fix dependencies is not something I know how to do. I also don’t want to accidently bugger up my linux install.
Maybe Ucupaint will work? I’ll have to try that. The problem is that that there doesn’t seem to be an easy to use baking facility in linux. XNormal won’t work for me in wine. Marmoset Toolbag won’t install in Lutris.
Blender can bake, but it’s a pain in the ass and it’s not directly integrated with the texturing pipeline.
There is 3D Coat, which has a linux version. I’ve never tried it and it means completely retraining myself.
EDIT: Seems that there is a texture-only version of 3D Coat called Textura: https://pilgway.com/products/product-buy/3dcoattextura
I am pretty sure Ucupaint does have some baking tools (it is one of the most actively developed addons out there) and there are other add-ons specifically for baking like Easy Bake.
Blenders native texture painting is also getting some work from the dev’s lately, so if not yet I am pretty sure that one day (not too far away) Blender will be a valid alternative it’s self.
