Linux friendly Substance painter alternative?

Good Morning,
I just swapped to Linux last night and went through trying to make sure some of my programs still worked but I couldn’t get my version of substance painter 2022 to work on steam.

Didn’t find out till about 20 minutes ago that if by some godly chance it does operate it wont be usable.

My question is, is there any Linux friendly alternative to Substance Painter, something i can use with my drawing monitor? If it helps, I’m okay with learning a new system/workflow because I had only put in 2 hours of work trying to figure the program out.

Thank ya’ll for you’re time. I’m off to work.

Is this a recent issue? I used to use the native Linux versions from their website before the Adobe acquisition and had no issues. Centos worked out of the box and I think Ubuntu was mostly fine as well despite not being officially supported.

I have instructions for installing Substance Painter Linux but does it not work

https://helpx.adobe.com/substance-3d-general/ecosystem/substance-for-linux.html

That page is only for companies with enterprise contracts.
Unless something has changed recently, Steam is the only way for individuals to get access to the Linux versions post Adobe acquisition.

3D Coat (https://3dcoat.com) has good painting tools. It’s more widely used in a handpainted process, but it fully supports PBR too.

It has versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It also has flexible options for buying it. You can have a one-off payment for a permanent licence, a “rent to own” option, or a basic monthly subscription.

There’s the full version with lots of functionality - sculpting, modeling, texturing, etc.
They also have two reduced versions, each with a specific focus. There’s a texturing version, and a 3D print focused version too.

You can get the 30 day free trial, to make sure that it works properly on your system, and does what you’d need it to do.

I couldn’t tell you- what i can say is that I’ve tried multiple times to start the thing and it’ll sit there with “playing” there for 5-10 minutes at a time, then switch back to play.

Couple of places i looked to fix it came up with “just don’t use it, it’s not compatible.”

Despite the name…

… this has also some painting capabilities.

( I’m more interested in the material making part and have never tried painting with it…)

ArmorPaint (https://armorpaint.org) is another inexpensive option.

It’s a bit more basic than the others, but it might do what you need. It’s still in active development, and all updates are free.

Ask the adobe community for help or search for posts with similar issues.

Did anyone manage to make substance painter via launched from steam work? Downloaded linux mint yesterday, tried making it work and had similar errors as the rest of the discussion, even trying multiple diferent proton versions. At a point, the splash screen (thr lizard wearing a coat) even appeared, but it crashed seconds later.

I think I know the answer but just want to check: it’s impossible to run substance painter 2024 steam in linux?

Edit: I had issues such as libtiff, VKD3D, didn’t go much in depth about it, I just gave up since I found no solution in the time.

I did run it without issues in March, so it’s definitely possible. The only thing that wasn’t working was space mouse. Basically I installed mint, installed drivers, installed steam, installed substance painter (2024).

About drivers, you just used mint default driver tool to install them? One of the first things that appeared once the OS was installed was driver installation for my Nvidia graphics card. I tried all the drivers that were offered, but none worked.

Yes. I haven’t used Mint before and I haven’t used Linux at all since 2012-2016 (I can’t remember exactly, but more ~10 years). So I didn’t mess with anything custom.

Try this, though ignore the first step, since it seems you already have the drivers installed:

thx, tho that should probably be @harpiart3d … for me it was running without issues

Well, for whoever wants to read it… :stuck_out_tongue:

On my next attempt, I’ll try these and let you know how it goes. Thank you.

Maybe this can be an alternative

Yes, but people in the Blender verse would still balk at no ‘smart’ materials even though just about anything is possible with a combination of texture painting and geometry nodes now.

I +1 for Ucupaint as a very deep and feature rich option, as Blender is a better painter as far as directly integrated with the rest of the modules.

Sorry to bump, but Mat Plus is worth a look for those having problems with substance painter under linux, or just those who want an alternative to Adobe.

I’ve got Substance painter working on my Nobara machine with an AMD graphics card. It won’t run on my Ubuntu machine with an Nvidia card.
