Log Cabin

hey everyone

Well, I was fooling around in blender, when inspiration struck.

The Goal:
a log cabin, in a grassy field, at night, with a lantern inside

I think I’m done with the cabin, so I’m moving on to the grassy field
and no, it was not inspired by the blenderguru tutorial

right now, it’s day, for visibility

Edit:

now there is grass!
i know it doesn’t look very good, but i think it might do for night
this might not be the final grass

c&c, please

next is the lighting/background

That is really neat with the textures and nice impact of colours. Look forward to any further updates!

thnx
i was starting to think the colors were a bit blah
most of the textures are procedural, btw
(only two images, i think)

What is the white on the cabin?

Any time you use a natural resource, like logs, to construct a building, there’s going to be gaps. This is especially true if you lack the necessary carpentry skills or the tools to plane (flatten) the parts where the logs meet.

In order to keep out the wind and keep in the heat, it’s not uncommon to see some sort of filler stuffed in the gaps as a sealant. Straw was often used, but if you had the money, or the knowhow, a plaster or mortar would be best.

In other words: It’s a filler for the gaps between the logs.

Edit: Nice cabin, by the way  I would have made the logs a little smoother and made the mortar a little rougher, but otherwise, quite nice. Needs some tools hanging from the walls, especially an axe.

@OkageStarr
thnx
yeah, i’m not satisfied yet either.
good thought with the axe, but i think i would keep my axe inside to keep it out of the weather
i’ll probably add other stuff, like a wood pile, other random junk,
i might work more on the textures (they’re pretty bad up close) :o

update:
night!

Quit with the reflection.
It awful, and logs don’t reflect in sunlight.

???
the only reflections are in the window

update time!

please comment on the lighting

fyi, 2.1 million faces, rendertime 4:30 on my old computer (1.73 Ghz, 512MB RAM :D)

2.1 million faces,oh F#@%! Excuse my french. I’m guessing a 4hr. 30min. render time since a 4 min. 30 sec. is a little hard to imagine with your specified specs. Might I suggest using a lower subsurf level, and use less particles and more children of particles, or if the grass is an object, use the unsubsurf script to lower the poly count. Remember good compostion, texturing, materials, and detailing is better than just more polys.
Oh and turn down the specularity of the wood and detail the filler more to make it look more porous from afar.
For a night scene it would be nice to have a ambient moon light since it is too dark right now, just use a hemi or spot light for that effect.
Overall, it is a good idea and you gave a fine amount of execution of it.
It is also great that you are not yet satisfied with it so far.
You can use this material to see how it looks.

no way in the world should that many polies be in that scene, might add a soil till, random logs and stuff other than that the day scene looks awesome, might add a blue light and some moon light to the night scene

Some rays from the indoor lights would look awesome

shadowfantasy-plz no French
reducing subsurf wouldn’t help much, only the logs are subsurfed
the real killer is the grass, 7 verts per blade
i’m aiming more for realistic lighting, not cinematic lighting, so it is a little dark
i might do a cinematic-lit version some other time
lighting is 1 hemi, 1 sun
both with a strong blue tint
i’m actually pretty pleased with the lighting being realistic
i’ve added a firewood stack
just a cube, cut and deformed, with an image texture
let me know if it looks bad

edit:
screen glare is an issue when looking at these images
log cabin, by itself, is 106,000 faces

edit 2:
here is a daytime render, at night
lol
i tried various wood materials, but none of them worked
i did tweak the previous material
tell me what you think
