Logo Modeling help?

http://www.pasteall.org/blend/13814 download this to see what im talking about.

I made a 2D logo in photoshop a few days ago and now I want to make a title animation with it. I started modeling the image but then when I got up to a point I was lost.

I have over lapping faces, faces were there shouldnt be faces and places that need faces.

I dont want someone to do it for me I just want some tips and points of what I did wrong,
this is suposed to be a learning experience

I can’t download it right now but if you have a problem with shadows you can click at the bar at the left at flat shadows then the shadow problem is done (only when it’s in 2D)

Nothing wrong with the design, but the modeling is wrong. You should look at the original wiki tutorial for modeling logos like this, you should be using bezier curves for the design so that you can create filled areas easily, as well as take advantage of the bevel and extrusions settings in the curve panel.
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.4/Tutorials/Modeling/Curves/B%C3%A9zier

IN Blender 2.5X and above, to close a curve you will need to change the selected poly lines to bezier in the tool shelf.

Why one would need bezier curves for such a straight line design is beyond me.

Go edit mode, face select, and delete faces which are not needed using menu ‘Only faces’. Then switch to edge select mode, select opposite edges where face should be and hit F. In some places use W Subdivide with selected edge, if there are two on opposite side.
You don’t have even to care much if the base mesh parts are not connected.
Then in face select mode select and extrude E on z axis what’s needed.

Image does not give clear 3d representation btw.

Happy blending!

For cleaner lines, better rounding and chamfering, and the ability to rapidly change the dimensions of the logo globally through sliders. Yeah, curves work pretty well and I use them in a lot of cases.

there’s a program called ‘gentledraw’ that i use sometimes to make a mesh out of a black and white image. I don’t know if there’s a free version or not, because I got mine on a CD that came with an issue of 3D World magazine.

I dont understand what You said when you said “delete faces which are not needed using menu ‘Only faces’” I cant find this option
(deleting the areas I want to be open)

then I dont know how you made the triangle at the top not over lap the bar at the top.

also what do you mean by the image dosn’t give a good 3d representation? I dosn’t look good in 3D?

I dont want to use any automated features, This is supposed to be a learning experience. thanks anyway

I dont know how to use curves, ( might be a good think to learn) but why would you use curves on an object consisting of straight lines?

nope, no problems with shadows. just modeling. thanks anyway

I think you could also fix shadow problems by deselecting shadows in the material pannel if im not mistaken.

Since you’ve gotten emblem into blender’s 3d view and background image is set, i assume Object and Edit modes are known.
If in Object mode you select emblem and switch to Edit mode you can manipulate parts of emblem - Vertices,Edges and Faces.
You delete something by selecting first, then pressing X key. In edit mode Menu appears, instead of Delete Yes/No like in Object mode. For blender 2.62 you’re using, there is ‘Faces Only’ amongst other choices.

That’s needed in order to not delete your emblems Edges, which are good and will be used in editing later on.

I would recommend deleting all faces to get fresh start on solid basis ;). You have your outline, at the end!

Now, if you’re comfortable with switching back and forth between blender’s display modes, choosing different selection modes while editing object, then follow my 1st post. If not, see some introductory tutorials and feel free to ask anything which is not clear right here in this thread.

In edit mode, select 3 vertices, hit f and you have triangle face.

Image which i see included in blend file allows me to clearly see outline (which is different from what’s been in 3dview). To give some advices I would prefer to see 3/4 turn picture color or greyscale to have better understanding of form of the emblem, it’s height differences if there are some etc.
I would imagine there are some different materials, grooves going around, whatever, which could be modeled or left out for the sake of simplicity.
If you’re going later to animate emblem, your animation might have impact on how the emblem is built too. Say, you might need that triangle part separate, it’ll flow into scene out of blue skyes and so on.
Good luck!
