looking for a open source pro-tools daw alternative

I’d be interested in supporting Ardour if I knew it would work on my Linux system and if there were some benefit over Audacity for example… did someone say it could be integrated with Blender seamlessly? What are the advantages?

+1 it may do the basic job but oh dear, clunk clunk clunk. It would be sweet to see a FOSS multi platform DAW in the same way that Blender can be a multi platform video editor. Everyone will hate me but, just shove more audio tools into Blender and I will be happy

Hello ccherrett, i love the look of the open octave you’ve been working on, and spotted it some time ago i will definitely be testing that out once you start porting over to windows, do you have any schedule for that?
sob story…
I’ve unfortunately plunged countless hours into trying to get linux up and running and have failed, I can get bits of it to work, although no network, many apps failing, perhaps it’s my laptops hardware, anyway I have too many projects on the go to go further down that route for now. Windows definitely works for me though no probs at all! It’s a miracle! haha.

Thanks and good luck with the OOS
Aidy.

We are looking to start the Windows port in the next month or so. So we will have something to test in about 1-2 months.

Thats amazing, and very exciting! You have a strong chance of being the audio equivalent of blender at this rate!

I’m really looking forward to it, i’ll keep em peeled.

A little screenshot of our newest node based audio connection manager:

You can route to any external or internal audio or midi source, also oomidi instruments are all grouped (1st violins and such) so all routes are easily found.

NOTE: Open Octave Studio auto connects all routes by default so you do not have to know anything about audio routing, this window is just for those who need more control.

ccherrett, well thats better than annoying send buttons! Looks great.

Yeah it is a huge improvement on what we were doing. I am personally very excited about it  More to come soon

I’m surprised nobody suggested a spin like Ubuntu Studio (http://ubuntustudio.org/). 12.04 LTS is out, installs a low latency kernel and XFCE by default, Jack is enabled, oodles of soft synths and plug-ins, and includes Ardour. I don’t know if the OpenOctave PPAs support 12.04 yet. ccherrett?

Yes the ppas are there for 12.04.

http://www.gouptoday.info/avatar3.jpgI got no problem to pay for good work, but testing must be possible for free.

Does this apply to osx as well? Or are there already osx builds or people able to compile it?

Edit: To myself - how about reading… “We will then also be porting to Mac.” so . yes.

Yes we will be porting to Mac right after we get Windows running.

Hi ccherret,

I always had the impression the Open Octave was more of midi editing/composing software. Can this be used simply as a multi track audio editor/mixer?

I’ll echo what freen said, the comparison between Audacity and Ardour is more like the difference between MSPaint and Gimp… whole different level. For anyone that wants to try out Ardour free, here’s a link to Ardour 3 beta for Linux and OSX. See “Ardour 3 Beta released”:

Ardour is really nice software it’s certainly worth a more than zero dollar amount:)

We started focusing on just midi, but as of late we are a full-blown DAW with an audio pipeline.

We have a few features to add for audio editing, but we are well on our way now.

We actually started coding tools into Ardour3 6 years ago, but it was moving so slow that we moved to fork rosegarden, then forked muse. We are very happy now with what we have. A full featured very easy to write music DAW.

that’s great to hear! I’ll have to give it a try:)

Hopefully some day this could be the go to tool for Open Source composing/sound design, this seems to be the only gaping hole in an otherwise completely Open Source work flow. At least it was like this in previous Blender productions.

ccherrett,

I just took a look at your site and realized you’re in the process of crowdfunding to add some serious functionality. I wish you luck it looks really impressive, it really could be the next Blender if more people know about it.

Just an idea but you may want to try to contact some people on the tube project http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1331941187/the-tube-open-movie just to make them aware of this tool. They’re also in the process of crowd funding for their project and as I understand it they want an entirely Open Source pipeline.

I also noticed you’re from Edmonton, cheers from Toronto:)

A final thought… a few months ago I watched a great documentary called “teaching the life of music” it’s about the transformative power of music. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1975966/plotsummary
I’m not sure where you can watch it but you may want to get into contact with some of these people (there’s a group in Ottawa), they have your same goal in mind and may be able to help with their established connections. I wish you the best of luck!

and to everyone else, install it, try it, and get the word out!

Added the ppa and testing it out. Looks great so far. Nice one!
