I can’t get it to work consistently. I use Alt+LMB. Is there a prefs setting which could be interfering?

You may have a system shortcut that is overriding it, I am on Linux and had a window manager shortcut that got in the way.

You nailed it. I had something weird in the navigation tab. I always get in the weeds with that bit. Got that sorted out and all works properly.
