Low poly hair for the tiger tail. How to do that?

I’m trying to make a tiger tail for some character, NPR, only for render stuff, the way MMD ones do it, aka planes with hair strands drew on it going up along the tail mesh. Issue is, that I don’t know how to approach it, or if it’s even possible…

My idea is, that hair strands would be drew using Alpha Map, and the color would be taken from tail mesh texture, like hair from particle system does cause manually drawing tiger fur pattern on each single plane would be quite some pain…

Can the planes from hair particle sytem be set to take the color from the mesh they’re on, aka planes on red part turn red, planes on purple go purple, and on green go green.
