M1A1 Abrams Battle Tank

Hi All,

I wish to share my project I have been working on for some time now, learning of course as I go, and continuing to update and tweak as I learn more things.

Here are the things I am question myself
1 - Are there too much “grunge” and damage to the tank (even if heavily used?) I wanted to emphasize it as a workhorse through heavy battle.
2 - Color grading. The tank is originally much more “orange” before I put it through post production. I felt that the faded brown (as it is in these screenshots) looked a bit more realistic.

Topology is certainly a focus point in the future as I see it from my own perspective as the area I lack most- although not much is here shown.
I have managed to reduced the face count to 633,886. It was initially over 2.5 million faces which I reckoned that even if it is not a game model, the faces should not be that high.

I am here to learn so feel welcome to correct me where you feel I might be wrong and thanks for any comments.

Thanks and happy blending!

Wow, seriously outstanding! The grunge and color are perfect. Really great job!

Thanks for the feedback ShadowCamero, much appreciated!

Thank you for the feedback ShadowCamero!
Interesting Blog you’ve got going there. The IOR list is definitely useful and the material study just as cool, thanks.

Looks good, you nailed the wheels. There is almost always paint over-spray on them like that. One note is the track pads on the inside, they are black rubber, and due to the fact that they are constantly being rolled over by the wheels they tend to stay more toward the black end of the range, both sides really, particularly where they make contact. The grunge varies wildly depending on the environment, dusty desert caked with silt, muddy forest etc, did they go thru water crossings etc. Being so variable it’s just a matter of matching it to the scene, not really a wrong answer there, but dirt does tend to accumulate more in certain areas, on and under the skirt, around the drive sprocket, etc. Plenty of reference photos around, you’ve done a fine job though.

In another life I did stretch in 2nd Armored Division. Spent plenty of time on the wash rack firing water cannons at tracked vehicles trying to clean them up after coming back from caking all that crap on.

decent reference photos:

Thank you Kract for the feedback (and those ref pics). I agree. after looking at those I can clearly see what you mean. I’ll get on it right away and post an update soon. Great to hear from first hand experience.

Another thing I have noticed afterwards is that the edges of the skirt etc. is way too sharp on the model. I will adjust that too and see if it can portray better.

Thanks again!

Alright, I have made the track pads black with some dirt & dust. Also, I have updated the wear-and-tear on the rear sprocket. It now shows some worn edges and the inner part of the sprocket has also slightly been updated.

Next up will be some more bump mapping where mud is on the body.

Hope this looks better…
