Mac vs Windows

The fight is on!
Just wondering if more people like Mac or PC more and why.

I’m for the Mac!!!
Go the Mac
Windows is for Spread-sheets + games. Mac is for everything else!

Wow!!! A Mac versus PC poll - I’ve never seen one of those before!

Why does anyone care what someone else uses?

Ubuntu (GNOME on a broader scale I suppose). Best desktop experience is getting even better. GNOME 2.6 looking better still.

OS X comes in a close second. Windows is, obviously, last. By long bloody shot.

well i picked windows because i’ve never used a mac

Ahh, another fellow Ubuntu user. Yea, Ubuntu is definitelly an awsome linux distro. All the linux capability, and still easy enough for a windows cross-over user (due to GNOME and the support for a wide range of hardware right of the bat). I personally dual boot it with XP, quite powerfull.

O, and talking about powerfull: Does anyone have XGL running on Dapper?

Are you talking about comparing Mac vs PC (hardware) or OSX vs Windows? (software)

Probably more in the way of ease of use and how well the opperating system works and stuff like that.

O, and talking about powerfull: Does anyone have XGL running on Dapper?

Yeah I got XGL running under Dapper Kubuntu, but its easier to set up using Ubuntu as Ubuntu uses GDM while Kubuntu uses KDM (GDM and KDM are for graphical management) and you need to have GDM as XGL only works under GDM atm.

Back on topic.

I’ve never used a Mac so I cant really say anything about it, but I prefere Kubuntu/Ubuntu.

George Foreman voice It’s so good, ah even put mah name on it.

I personally prefer Mac OS X. In some ways I like all systems - Linux for it’s raw speed and the fact it gets improved quicker and Windows for its software support.

The main reason I don’t use Linux is that there are few commercial software packages for it. I use Photoshop, Shake, Final Cut, Flash, Quicktime, Illustrator etc. and I can’t be doing with the headache required getting those to work. Not to mention getting hardware to work reliably and picking a distro, window manager…

The reasons I don’t use Windows are many. Viruses, spyware, cumbersome interface, lack of control, not unix, made by an unethical company.

Mac OS X gives me the right blend of unix power and ease of use, commercial software and hardware support.

Apple have also just reduced their hardware prices so I can (and will) now buy an Intel Core Duo 1.66 with 1GB Ram for £450. It only has integrated graphics but I managed to run Quake 4 on it and that’s all the power I need at that price.

Ultimately, I would like to have a unified unix based OS that ran on all hardware but I don’t see that ever happening. Linux users want absolute freedom and that comes at the expense of commercial backing. Microsoft want absolute control and push proprietary formats and OS licensing. Apple want to tie their system to their hardware. I don’t see how that situation can be resolved so at the end of the day, you use what gets your job done with the least resistance.

Dittohead,
I think you better lock this up.
I know a few people who are going to mess this up real bad.
P

Windows XP.

I use my computer for professional 3D modelling and other art work so I need the hardware power of a PC which the Mac just can’t rival.

My other main use, and possibly what I spend most time doing is playing games. Obviously the only choice for that is windows XP. I’m also an amateur OCer and I like to build my own systems from scratch so again that’s an windows only choice.

I don’t understand anyone paying decent money for a mac when you could spend the same on a PC and get twice the power. And for anyone that says Windows has too many viruses/spyware then you obviously don’t know how to protect your computer against that sort of thing. I don’t have a firewall or any antivirus program constantly running and my PC is just fine. I run adaware or bazooka if I detect any problem.

I don’t know how a mac could be better then a PC. For me the decision is a no-brainer.

Angus “Mac” MacGyver is the best, no doubt about that.

He’s just so smart and sexy… damn right.

Wait… you mean Mac the computer?.. oh… then f*** Mac…

Another vote here for choice number 3.
Ubuntu!

Macs use the same hardware:

You can install Windows on a Mac.

That is a PC-only choice. You can overclock Macs (though you don’t need to 'cos they’re so fast anyway :p) but it’s true you can’t build your own. Often times, a machine upgrade costs the same anyway and has less depreciation.

You could spend double on a PC and get half the power. It just depends how you spend it. As seen with the G5 supercomputer cluster, it’s quite easily possible to get better value from using Macs.

Step 1: don’t use Windows.

As it happens, you’re right, I don’t know how to protect against that sort of thing beyond installing AVG, Zonealarm and similar and I’m sure most people are the same. That doesn’t reduce the number of exploits that are available.

Great.

Mac OS X (unix based, good developer tools, style, better bundled software), stylish hardware that has good design so it runs quietly. You get a physical copy of your OS bundled with each Mac and you get customer service that is ranked among the best. Innovative design like magnetic power cords and latches, Macbook keyboards, innovative system features that you’ll all be talking about in a few years when you get them. Software you can’t run on a PC like Final Cut Pro.

Those are some reasons why someone may consider a Mac to be better than a PC but people need to stop comparing the two like that. Apple are a hardware company like Dell, HP, Gateway, Sony who all make prebuilt machines and all their prices and spec are competitive.

I agree that something needs to be done with these threads because we always get the same misinformation coming up and it really gets nowhere. There have been more than enough threads like this already so if anything, it should go in the common threads area.

Mac vs Windows

So we’re pitting an entire computer system against an operating system are we?

Surely you meant OSX vs Windows or MAC vs PC?

Well, being a Linux person puts me in an odd position here:

Mac vs PC? PC.
OSX vs Windows? OSX, by default.
