mad scientist character

I really enjoy creating random characters and this is my latest. Nothing too special, just a fairly stereotypical mad scientist character. I call him Jarvis, for absolutely no good reason!

All the modelling was done in 2.5 and was the first time that I had used it. It took a bit to get used to, but I enjoyed it (for the most part!). This was also my first completed project on my new computer, which has been amazing! I’m not sure how I survived on my laptop for so long.

Anyway, a quick description (I just did a fairly lengthy blog post about him here, so if you want a little bit more info and some more pictures feel free to check there) of him. He was modeled in 2.5 (alpha 0 at the time) and textured, rigged, and rendered in 2.49b. He also has a couple of particle systems for the hair and eyebrows. Everything is pretty basic, nothing too special with him. There are still some problems with a few things that I may get to fixing eventually, but I think he’s completed enough so far.

I always try to learn something new whenever I get into a project (I am still most definitely a beginning user!) and this time it was nodes. After learning a bit about them I’m disappointed in myself for not learning them earlier, they are really fun to use! Once you get the hang of them they are fairly easy as well. I found Pablo’s Venom’s Lab DVD to be pretty helpful during the process.

Overall I’m really pleased with how Jarvis came out and also with the bits that I’ve learned during the process. I’m not too sure what I’m going to do with him yet, but I may end up making a full scene for him. I was thinking about doing a frankenstein type setup with the stereotypical castle top laboratory. I may even try my hand at making a monster for him to work on!

cool, nice character!

Thanks spacetug!

Just realized that the .jpg version that was uploaded to BA is a bit grainy, sorry about that! The full res png version is here.

saw the full res w/no artifacts. nice! except for the weird mouth that makes him look like a bird.

Thanks bojo600! He does look a lot like a bird. Actually this was intentional, I modeled his nose based on a really large beak. I always thought that evil looking vultures (quick example) look very similar to what I imagine mad scientists as in my head. I guess that his fowl-ness (bad joke, sorry) extended to his mouth without my even trying!
