Did you remember to reinstall your video driver as well? The Win98 re-install probably put a default ms version in for you which is different than the one you were previously using.
i had that problem too. in my case it happened when i upgraded to the latest nVidia drivers for my TNT2 (ho hum) and reverting sorted it out again. Most annoying though cos i want to change my gamma, but can’t have that and blender . . .
Have checked my video setup completely and it is correct the way I had it before and still no luck with blender… What should I try next to correct this?
what were the issues you were having before? did they go away? Its possible something is wrong with your puter.
If you want you could do a windows update to ‘rev up’ your install with the latest MS fixes. A lot of them are security fixes but there are a few all around bug fixes.
Also, you could try downloading and reinstalling to see that you didn’t happen to get a corrupted file, you could run a scandisk to make sure there are no bad sectors on your drive. Go into the device manager and make sure all your hardware is functional and you have no conflicts.
make sure you have the latest video card driver- not just one that works, I can’t stress this enough.
turn off opaque window moving, font antialiasing, any video ‘features’ that aren’t neccessary.
I think blender does stuff with the sound as well. So make sure your sound drivers are okay, and check to see if any sound stuff is running.
turn of unnessaccary tasks, things like aol, im, chat clients etc.
lastly do these things one by one to know which one fixed the problem.
You have already reinstalled Blender (did you re-download it for the reinstall?)
Check for device conflicts.
Turn off hardware acceleration for the video card (just to test)
-You can try increasing the acceleration if disabling gets Blender to work.
If turning off acceleration fixes the problem, that is an indication that you should update th video drivers, even if the settings are the same, Windows may be using the wrong driver.
Run scandisk
Did you make any changes with the sound/audio setup on your computer. There was something about that and I can’t remember the fix. Dont’ have a music CD playing or a multimedia app running when you start up Blender.
