Man vs. Giant

This is going to be a month long project starting from the ground up which will be a collaborative effort between my colleague and I. The concept is a warrior with a mad max sort of design fighting a giant/ogre in amphitheater ruins. it will be an animated short lasting about one minute thirty seconds, and will feature shot break downs for about a minute afterwards… I will handle all the work done inside Blender itself, while he will create all the textures and models with z brush and photoshop. I have begun concept art with the character design today. keep in mind this is the beginning of the beginning, rough sketches.

Love the artwork so far, hope the final models will be that good. =)

test render of the lighting and outdoor scene.

Bit dark I’d say… nice idea though… hope you finish it!

Looks promising, i’ll subscribe to this one!

template for textures…one being a wall for the coliseum, the other being a brick which will be repeated and slighty varied. the wall is 1200x1200, the brick is only 200x200…that may change.

base meshes for warrior and giant in progress.

template for warrior texture…pretty straight forward…the arm bands and hands will be separate objects for easier texturing and animating.

it’s only 800x800, the actual size will be 3 times larger than that.

some test renders for the purpose of scale.

quick paint over…

the guy is changing a bit…

update of the warrior…he is now an ebony warrior, which i think makes the whole thing more exotic and original than the caucasion bad ass with scars.

not done…but no he has corn rows!

Very nice indeed, i think the idea of the ebony warrior will stick out. How about the giant? How do you plan on doing him? Ebony? Caucasian? Furry?

Hmm, I’d keep the hair in texture. It’ll look a lot better, and it helps keep the poly count down. Work on the nose and lips. The torso is looking awesome. You should post some more wires.

No idea what race the giant is gonna be, if he’s any identifiable race at all…

he’s gonna be a Rasta jamaican ogre…no im just kidding he’s just gonne be a huge snarling beast with a thick rhino skin. haha. no race in this one.

here is a design of the swords, as well as a base model for the amphitheatre.

you should work a bit on the theatre i think… if it’s going to be a gladiator-fight, you should add a luxury balcony thing at middle height, as in the old roman amphitheatres, you could even make an interessanting point of view from up there, as in “Gladiator”, you know and you could add stalls at opposite sides of the arena where the giant/man comes out, in other fights the wild animals or so…
as here:

How the men and beasts would have entered the amphitheater during normal use is a design problem I’ve been struggling with. The giant being, y’know, a giant sorta complicates things.

Not all Roman amphitheaters would have had luxury balconies, however.

Yup that’s true, they weren’t all “Colisseum’s of Rome” As for the “giant” door, you can make a lift coming from underground or just a simple (but HUGE) arc that almost slices the arena (i’ll try to post a crude drawing later)
