Why would Blender 4 fail to include a management window where all materials used in a scene would be displayed?

That dropdown cannot even be resized, why not?

You can use the attribute editor in blender file mode to delete materlals
Turn on the Material Utilities add-on that comes with Blender, then everything you need is just Shift +Q
It is very easy to overlook the many “add-ons that ship with Blender.” Definitely spend some quality time looking through everything that is available in the various categories. You’ll be very glad you did . . .
