Marbles

Just playing. I may expand this.

There are only two materials (other than the ground) in the scene. Every marble uses the same material.

looking good

how did you do the mesh for these marbals ?
show some topo
and which material did you use ?

It’s no big secret, and no fancy tricks, so here’s the blend.

The interesting material is the the second material (just called “material”) on the marbles, which randomizes the colour on each.

OK - no way this is uploading here, so you have one week https://filebin.net/cf4dxggv4plcihh6

Hope you find it useful.

will looks at the mat
you could have left the world HDRI out
at 4 K this is probably very big

but can you give a general explanation

i can see one UV image like a marble texture
there is also a rigid body why ?

thanks

The original used an array modifier to create multiple marbles, and then drop them to get a natural roll, hence the rigid body.

I tried removing everything I could - still came in at 9.5M.

The UVs may confuse you. Each “wing” of the internal is compressed to a zero size UV, and then they are dotted along the UV map, each displaced from the next. Together with the gradient, this means that each gets a unique colour from the colour ramp. The random hue changes this as you go through duplicate objects, which effectively randomizes the colours in each individual marble.

To see it more clearly, have the UV editor and the 3D view side by side, sync the two and select each “dot” in the UV editor. This will select a whole geometry on the model.

As in this:

And so I was playing a little bit. Nothing like putting a scene together, but I just discovered the new sky in 2.9, and didn’t like the flat white ground. So dumped the HDRI, and went about texturing the ground. I had nothing special in mind and just set about playing, and I accidentally made sand (yes, honestly, complete accident). EDIT: I’m gonna call it a “Bob Ross moment” with a happy little accident.

EDIT2: This is weird. In the UK Bob Ross is rarely on TV. No sooner had I made my last edit than I put TV on, and lo and behold, “The Joy of Painting” is on. Providence? Supernatural? Who Knows/

It needs some refining, but I kinda like it. Not somewhere you would expect to find marbles, mind.
