Matchaspirulinabubu's sketchbook

hi im omandi, i worked in animation for a little bit and i want to get into 3d modeling and improve my animation skills, modeling skills and storyboarding skills. I’ll be posting a mix of 2d sketches, 3d models, 2d animatics and just using this as a general use sketchbook. my goal is to post every day!

feedback is more than welcomed but remember your manners and I will remember mine!

my first 3d program was Sketchup Pro for Desktop so I will post a few things I made on there, but learning blender for animation and modeling is my goal!!

This Mech Miner was modeled in SketchUp a few years ago IIRC end of 2023.
I don’t think im gonna revisit it. But ill do another mech in blender, using what I learned in sketchup.

one thing I want to remember for next time, when I do model in blender, is that I want to make the arms and legs of the model manipulate-able (if thats a word…)

separatist bridge in sketchup

cause i’m a star wars goober >;0

sketches for a venator gun deck I was gonna model in sketchup, my license expired so I might end up modeling this in blender instead.

ship that went with the mech miner, modeled in sketchup opened in blender cause I was interested in how it would look and then I got overwhelmed by blenders UI and bailed.

now for some character stuff from my archive.

mech pilot i want to revisit the design of at some point. There’s a mech called the summoner I want to model to pair with this pilot that I sketched out. I think I want this to be my first mech I model in blender.

a quinlan vos head I did cause I wanted to work out my own style to design him with. I’ll probably revisit this as well. there’s a bit more that I did of him but I find that I don’t like my old drawings of him so they’ll rot on my PC while I work out another way to approach drawing him.

some vader drawings when I was thinking of a design for vader that aligned with the early concept art for him by Ralph McQuarrie. Initial idea is that he still lost to obi-wan but by some miracle he got away with a few lost limbs and no burn damage.

I’ll probably post an animatic WIP tonight tho.

This is some sick work you’ve done. CAD used for scifi is always so cool. Also, the Quinlan Vos piece? Hell yeah. I hope you continue to share more

thanks I appreciate it!

I hope y’all dont mind me dumping stuff here!

I like being able to put stuff somewhere so I can look at my progress chronologically.

messing around in blender, trying to get a feel for things will watch a video or two on how to start modeling stuff. I’m trying to think about it like I did when I was first learning sketchup.

some short term goals for myself. will post as I complete them.

this list includes 2d and 3d things I want to do.

this is mostly a note to self.

Picked up the iPad again to learn painting. Got a little ahead of my self with the first one so I dialed it back and started basic. I wrote down how I was feeling because I got upset with the first attempts. Gonna do more of these and then escalate it.

some more single tone studies.

I think I’ll write reflections every time I escalate the exercises (going from 1 tone to 2 tones to 3… etc.)

Since I’m attempting to learn 3d and 2d simultaneously I think it would be wise for me to try to be more efficient with my learning rather than brute forcing it. Of course the amount of studies and models I make will determine how much better I get, but I think if I write a reflection every time I escalate an exercise. It should help me squeeze more out of a study.

Plus i love to yap.

learning low poly modeling from a video

I didn’t have much time to open blender today or this week rather. But between my classes, I found some time for painting practice. I think I’m realizing what I’m doing wrong or rather what is going wrong in my practice paintings. Looking at my older silhouette to tone asaro heads I have a nice feel for how to block out the head but as soon as I start adding another tone, I become confused but yesterday I told myself to just squint. I took off my glasses and really tried to approach it as if it were the two tone exercise, but that started to quickly fall apart because as soon as I did that, I didn’t know how to get the shapes to look how they were supposed to if that makes sense but this attempt Kind of clicked instead of starting with the darkest value I determined that it would be easier to start with the mid tone value, and then lay the dark on top of that and then finally lay the lightest value on top of those. I think this is the best way for me to continue these types of studies.
